James Owen’s emergence in the National Hunt training ranks this season has been nothing short of phenomenal and with 17 winners from only 70 runners and a strike rate of 24% it could hardly better advertise the talents of his Green Ridge Stables team in Newmarket’s Hamilton Road.
A look at his own pedigree would probably explain why he is flying high right now as he has been the UK Arabian Champion Trainer on no less than five occasions and, alongside his wife Jenny, has enjoyed considerable success in the point-to-point world both as trainer and amateur jockey.
The striking fact about his success has been the improvement he has found from others’ castoffs. This has seen the quality of his team improved markedly with the most notable recent acquisition being the Gredley family-owned Burdett Road, who won the Golden Gates Handicap at Royal Ascot.
That potential top-notch juvenile is set to make his debut shortly and the same owners’ Too Friendly has displayed his prowess for Owen with three victories this season and a career best effort in a listed event at Kempton on Sunday.
James said: “It’s been great, and we have gradually grown. We have a really good set up here and the staff are very hard working and it’s a good ship. Long may it continue.”
The future certainly looks bright for Owen and his team, and he kindly talked to Tony Elves of attheraces.com as he looks forward to Cheltenham returning with the Showcase meeting this weekend.
