Hugo Palmer has made a lightning start to his third season in Manor House Stables in Malpas, Cheshire.
He’s currently standing on 22 winners from only 96 runners and the remarkable strike rate of 23% and it looks very much like a personal best could be smashed this time around.m
The former Newmarket trainer took over the reins at Manor House in March 2022 and just fell short of a £1 million in prize money when ending the season on £987,238 and 43 winners and, although the winners went up to 56 in 2023 the prize money total last year was £931, 238.
For yard boss Michael Owen and many of his fellow owners the Boodles May Festival at Chester, live on Sky Sports Racing, will be the venue for a much-desired local strike and the team were so narrowly denied in the Chester Cup last year when Zoffee failed by only a neck behind Metier.
Zoffee has rejoined Hugo after a short spell hurdling with Olly Murphy and all roads lead to a repeat bid for the barrel of Cheshire Cheese.
Hugo said: “This time last year we were really struggling to get Zoffee to come and he was only just ready to run when we ran him in the Chester Cup. He just missed out by a neck which was agony.
“He seems to be well ahead on where he was last year, and I am really happy with him. His work has been excellent, he looks fantastic, and he is 3lb lower than when going to Chester last year. If we can get a bit of luck, I think he goes with a proper chance.”
“They have started really well, and we have worked very hard and made a lot of changes which I am very pleased with. It’s easier to have a good strike rate through the winter as there are more considerations that come into play during the summer.
“As a trainer you expect A, B and C to add up to D and when your somewhere new it doesn’t necessarily click like that. I would like to feel things are clicking now and we are seeing the results of that.
“It would be nice if we could have some luck at Chester and we will be having plenty of runners there.”
Hackman did produce the goods for the team when winning his maiden last year and, with the Palmer team in such resplendent form, hopes will be high that the back of net can be hit maybe more than once or twice this time around.
