Nine of the last 13 renewals have either gone the way of Willie Mullins or Nicky Henderson and that trend is likely to be enhanced. There has been plenty of hype surrounding Mighty Park after he won with his head in his chest at Fairyhouse and with his master handler likening him to Faugheen subsequently, it's not hard to see why he has been all the rage. However, there is lots of substance to the form of OLD PARK STAR, who produced a brilliant display when hosing up in the Rossington Main at Haydock. Henderson's six-year-old is a straightforward type and can remain unbeaten over timber. Barry Connell has a fine record in this race in the last three years, with a gold and silver medal on his resume, so Eachtotheirown shouldn't be underestimated.
Old Park Star has been at the head of the betting for this for some time and he impressed with his slick jumping in the Rossington Main last time. However that form does look weak enough for a Grade 2 and though his previous victory here was boosted at that level he will need to improve again up in class to see off the Irish raiders. TALK THE TALK was set to win at the top level over the festive period when coming down but made amends at the DRF last time when he beat a couple of the leading contenders for the Turners. He did exceptionally well to get up that day as he came from the back off a modest gallop in a race dominated by those ridden prominently. He should get a stronger pace to aim at here and the top rated in the field is open to further progress if getting it. He is chosen ahead of the much hyped Mighty Park who never came off the bridle on debut. His top connections have been bullish but he was gifted a weak race at the start last time and this is going to be a much tougher test. There are a couple of horses with plenty of speed who could also be of interest. El Cairos ran well in the bumper here last term and has looked classy despite some jumping issues over hurdles. He does lack experience though unlike Too Bossy For Us who wasn't disgraced in the Triumph last year. The dual purpose performer ran some good races on the Flat last summer before returning to hurdles last month outclassing his rivals. This better ground will suit and his pace could see him fight for a place at a huge price.

One of the big Anglo-Irish clashes of the week, with the exciting Lulamba taking on last year's Supreme hero Kopek Des Bordes. The former arrives unbeaten in three starts over fences and has followed the same route Nicky Henderson plotted with Sprinter Sacre (2012) and Altior (2017) by landing the Game Spirit against seasoned chasers en route. However, the five-year-old can take time to warm to his task and there has to be a concern that he might be taken off his feet early doors. Kopek Des Bordes tries to become just the third horse this century to land an Arkle on the back of one outing over fences, having missed key prep runs after impressing at Navan in November. Recent schooling sessions seem to have left his camp very confident he is ready to face a test of this nature, but it wouldn't be a surprise if stable companion KARGESE came out on top. Runner-up in the 2024 Triumph to Majborough, the mare was a comfortable winner of the County Hurdle 12 months ago and all of her best form has come in the spring. She did remarkably well to battle back after a mistake at the last against Romeo Coolio in the Irish Arkle, going down by a neck, and that experience may give her a vital edge.
A strong renewal where LULAMBA is fancied to give his stable victory for the second year in a row. Like last year's winner he is a strong stayer who could well end up contesting a Gold Cup but he has shown he just about has the speed for this trip when winning the Henry VIII and Game Spirit. On both those occasions his jumping warmed up as the race progressed and it was an impressive performance out of novice company last time. The experience could prove vital here and can help him defeat last year's Supreme winner Kopek Des Bordes. That rival looked spectacular when making a winning chase debut but he has had issues in this interrupted campaign and his keenness is a concern given the stiff finish. Kargese was a Grade 1 winner over hurdles and took the County here last year so also boasts plenty of speed. She ran a huge race at the top level last time when narrowly beaten by a rival who is favourite for a Grade 1 later in the week. It was remarkable that she managed to rally that day having gone off very quickly in front. If this doesn't come too soon on the back of a hard race she will be a dangerous front-runner. The trio look clear of the rest of the field which may be headed by the strong stayer Steel Ally who was an impressive winner of the Kingmaker last time.

SARATOGA has a similar profile to his half-brother Brazil, who beat Gaelic Warrior in the 2022 renewal for Padraig Roche and Mark Walsh, in that he came from Ballydoyle as a smart Flat recruit and has taken well to the jumping game. He made an unbeaten filly pull out all the stops at Naas and this looks to have been a carefully laid-out plan. The JP McManus colours are also carried by Manlaga, who was once prominent in the Triumph Hurdle market and beat Pourquoi Pas Papa and The Mighty Celt at Haydock, although she is now 6lb worse off with both. Jack Kennedy is a fascinating booking for Winston Junior considering Gordon Elliott is doubly represented, while Quinta Do Lago chased home a couple of Willie Mullins' leading Triumph contenders at Fairyhouse. Mullins' chief hope in this contest is probably Madness D'elle.
The Irish have an excellent record in this race and Saratoga heads the betting for a yard which took this a few years ago having caught the eye under some considerate rides on all of his starts over hurdles. His penultimate run in particular looks strong form and the ex Ballydoyle inmate should have more to offer in handicaps. He is respected but he hasn't always looked a straightforward ride so he looks short enough. Harwa benefitted from an overly strong pace when making a winning stable debut and should appreciate this likely stiff test. He is one of the few who have been given every chance by the British handicapper and he is respected for connections who have enjoyed success here in recent years. However the race may stay on these shores for once with a host of leading contenders coming from UK yards. Winston Junior has long been fancied for this after an impressive win last time but he was gifted the race at the start that day and has gone up in the weights. Manlaga, Pourquoi Pas Papa and The Mighty Celt filled the podium in the Victor Ludorum last time with all of them looking to hold solid claims here. The latter was given a negative ride that day on his first start since a wind op and looks on a good mark on his French form so could build on his stable debut. It is notable that Cobden switches off weekend winner Bibe Mus so his ride has to hold a big chance off what also looks a generous rating based on his French form. The former did best of the trio last time but all of her best form has come on soft ground so she may struggle in these conditions. Instead her stablemate MUSTANG DU BREUIL is selected having looked a slightly unlucky loser in the Dovecote last time after being hampered at a key stage. This stiffer track should suit better and a 3lb rise for that effort on similar ground should be no barrier to success.

Iroko, a previous Festival winner, finished fourth in last season's Grand National and all roads lead towards Aintree once again. The form of his Ascot victory just before Christmas has worked out nicely, with runner-up Firefox not far off the principals in the Irish Gold Cup, and he is expected to be right in the mix, despite carrying top weight. Jagwar needs to finish in the first four if connections want him to join his stable companion in Liverpool next month and there is definitely hope that the step up in trip can bring about improvement. Last year's winner Myretown hasn't kicked on as expected and his stamina limitations were on display in Haydock's Grand National Trial, while his jumping has left a lot to be desired at times. Leave Of Absence went close to winning a big handicap at Ascot just before Christmas but the vote goes to HYLAND, who finished fourth there after a crucial mistake two out. Unlucky in the Coral Gold Cup when hampered by the fall of Myretown, he remains capable of landing a prize off his current mark and it is notable that connections reach for first-time cheekpieces.
A race usually farmed by the British with the Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero team hopeful of continuing that trend. Top weight Iroko is the class angle in the race based on his Grade 1 form as a novice and his placed effort in last year's Grand National. All roads likely lead back to Aintree this term but he wasn't beaten far by the King George winner earlier in the season and he was a decisive victor last time in a decent chase. Those efforts make him look well treated in this grade despite shouldering top weight. It's possible that he won't be given a hard time if not bang there though so his stablemate JAGWAR is preferred. He is becoming expensive to follow after another narrow defeat here last time but he did pull a long way clear with the winner that day so a 3lb rise looks lenient. He was a winner at this meeting last year though and has the potential for further improvement now upped to staying trips for the first time. Knight Of Allen failed to fully convince with his stamina last time but it did come on unsuitably heavy groud so he is worth another chance over this far. He looks well treated on his previous run at this venue which has been boosted by a pair who finished ahead of him and he remains unexposed in handicaps. Back on a favourable sound surface he could prove the main threat while the biggest danger from Ireland may be Patter Merchant at a much bigger price. He is the stable first string on jockey bookings and he was unsuited by the way the race developed last time. His autumn form has worked out well and he looks on a dangerous mark here for top connections.

It's hard to ignore the claims of last year's Turners winner THE NEW LION, who has been targeted at this ever since. He was still in command when falling at the second-last in the Fighting Fifth, with 2025 Champion Hurdle heroine Golden Ace once again the beneficiary of the contest falling apart. That was The New Lion's sole defeat in an otherwise impressive career and after he got back on track with a workmanlike display in the International here, there is a suspicion that untapped potential could be unlocked in Dan Skelton's charge. Brighterdaysahead turned the tables on her Christmas conqueror Lossiemouth in the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown but the application of first-time cheekpieces, along with the return to better ground, may work in the favour of Willie Mullins' mare. Those two are the obvious dangers, although Greatwood/Kingwell victor Alexei is working his way through the ranks and is well worth his place at this level.
An intriguing renewal where a trio of mares hold strong claims. Brighterdaysahead defeated LOSSIEMOUTH at the DRF last time but she did have the testing ground in her favour and her re-opposing rival never looked happy from an early stage. Gordon Elliott's mare has twice come to this meeting and twice disappointed behind Golden Ace including in this race last year. The quick surface again will favour last year's winner who has been fortunate to land her Grade 1s benefitting from late fallers. One of those was The New Lion who may well have won the Fighting Fifth but for falling on his reappearance. Though he may ideally want further than this the stronger pace will suit and he should be staying on up the hill to fight out the finish. It is the Willie Mullins charge in first time cheekpieces who makes most appeal though going for victory at this festival for the fourth year in a row. She proved she was as good as ever when winning a couple at the top level in the autumn and the drying ground can help her register a tenth victory in Grade 1s. Stablemate Poniros landed the Triumph here last year and wasn't disgraced behind a couple of these in his first start in open company. He's entitled to come on for that first run since the summer and if ridden more positively he can throw down a big challenge.

MADARA spent more than a year on the sidelines and after blowing away the cobwebs at Wetherby over Christmas, he took a step forward to claim the silver medal at Kempton. He goes well at Cheltenham and can capitalise on competing off the same mark as when runner-up in the 2024 December Gold Cup here. McLaurey was a bitter disappointment in last year's County Hurdle, but he returns having been brought along patiently over fences and he could be nicely treated. Down Memory Lane has been off since landing a competitive handicap at Navan, and Will The Wise has also been freshened up after coming up short in the Paddy Power at Leopardstown. Classy novice No Questions Asked has to be taken seriously too.
The pair at the head of the market Madara and Mclaurey look to have been lined up for this contest for some time. Both were given considerate rides last time but hinted that they were returning to form finishing off their races well. They have both been seen over an inadequate 2m at times this season and decent ground is key for the duo who can enjoy a productive spring. DOWNMEXICOWAY way makes more appeal though at a bigger price having caught the eye behind a classy pair in a Grade 1 last time. He couldn't go the early gallop that day but finished off well under tender handling and his previous Grade 3 form suggests this longer trip will suit. He's proven himself versatile ground wise and is chosen ahead of Zurich by the stable jockey. No Questions Asked is another who is well treated on his novice form including a Grade 2 win last time and if his stamina holds up over this longer trip he should also be thereabouts.

Backmersackme caught the eye when runner-up here in October and came good when landing a valuable prize at the Dublin Racing Festival. This appears to have been the long-term plan, although the extra distance isn't guaranteed to suit. Newton Tornado booked his place with an impressive victory at Doncaster in January and is capable of further progression after a 6lb rise. Wade Out sports first-time cheekpieces, which will need to assist Sean Bowen, but he is respected up in trip, while Holloway Queen would be a massive player if replicating her impressive Newbury success. Paul Nolan is no stranger to lining one up for this meeting and ICEBERG THEORY makes plenty of appeal. The seven-year-old won a handicap in fine style at Cork in November and shapes as though a staying test will bring out the very best in him.
BACKMERSACKME caught the eye at this course earlier in the season when he flew home from an unpromising position over 3m1f. He is 11lb higher here but he has since landed a hot Grade 3 handicap in Ireland and he idled a touch in front that day so may have had more in the tank. Now his jumping has improved he's open to further progress and is fancied to defeat King Of Answers who represents a yard in red hot form. He showed the benefit of cheekpieces and a positive ride when a cosy winner last time and has shaped as if marathon trips would bring about further improvement. Holloway Queen was another impressive winner last time and a 10lb rise could underestimate the unexposed mare. The quicker surface is a concern but if handling it she can fill the places with the erratic Pic Roc. That rival bounced back to form last time and remains on an attractive rating but does have enthusiasm concerns.
