Trainer says

If he got in the Golden Mile he would probably run there too. If not, there is a mile and one handicap on Saturday. Benacre was second at Hamilton last week and travelled into the race really well. He was just touched off by an improving three-year-old he was giving a lot of weight too. He is in very good fettle with himself, and his mark is competitive. He won at Goodwood as a two-year-old, so the track holds no fears for him.

He will hopefully join The Gatekeeper in the Golden Mile and was third in the race last year. He is a bit frustrating in that he is on a long losing sequence now, but he has run a lot of good races in defeat, particularly at the Guineas meeting where he finished second.

We have won the Chesterfield Cup a few times and last won it with Forest Falcon in 2022. We have Killybegs Warrior, Wadacre Gomez and Loyal Touch entered and if they all get in, they will run. Killybegs Warrior started of the season really well at in the Rosebery at Kempton when second to Cemhaan but has not really been getting the fast ground he likes, and I have set him a few stiff asks. He has come down in the weights and is down to 97 now and I think it is a mark he can be competitive off and, hopefully, he will get decent ground next week. He needs to bounce back to his best form, but I would be hopefully he could go well.

I think Knightswood will go for the Summer Handicap on the Saturday. He finished fourth in a big mile and six handicap at Newmarket July Festival and at that meeting you really needed to be up with the pace and he was the only horse who came from the back. He showed he is in in good fettle. He is a tough honest handicapper, and he could run ok.

He basically didn’t have a race at Ripon last weekend he was stuck on the rail and never came out and never came off the bridle. You can put a line through that completely and he has been running solidly in lots of decent handicaps all year. He will be a big enough price, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he ran well. He might actually like a bit of give in the ground.

She might go for the Glorious Stakes on the Saturday. She has been a little bit difficult to place having won a listed race earlier the year at Ayr. As a result, we are trying to get more black type with her and this is a race that can always cut up.

Trainer says

He will run in the two and a half mile race on Friday. He won at Goodwood earlier in the year over two miles and I thought he ran a solid race in the Ascot Stakes. We know he likes the track, and we know he will stay, and they are probably the most important factors for the race. He is a bit of a quirky old horse, and he doesn’t travel very well, and it can be hard work for the jockeys. Though he is capable on his day and when James Doyle won on him, he said come back here for this race.

He will definitely run in the Golden Mile. He was second in the race last year and then signed off by winning the Balmoral. He is a real top-class handicapper and the only slight concern is those two runs from last year were on soft ground.

Urban Sprawl will have a similar plan to Benacre. He was third in the Britannia last year and is a talented horse on his day. He had an injury at the start of the year and was out for a long time and would have needed his recent Newmarket run badly. We had to get a run into him before Goodwood and I expect him to step forward markedly for that.

With Wadacre Gomez it is a bit of an experiment running on the turf in the Chesterfield Cup. He has had a fantastic season, but it’s all been on the all-weather and nearly all at Chelmsford. His latest run took him up to 92 which means there are no more options on the all-weather for the foreseeable future, so we are forced to go back on turf. He has only run on turf three times but on his all-weather form he is very progressive.

The plan is to go to the meeting, and we haven’t quite decided yet whether to go for the Gordon Stakes on the Thursday or the mile and six Summer Handicap on the Saturday. He is a horse we have always thought a huge amount of, and things have really come together for him in his last two races. He is going to have to step up to the next level, but we are working back from the St Leger which is a possible target for him, and one of these two races would be suitable. I am probably leaning to the mile and six as the trip will suit him better for him, but the Gordon can often cut up to a very small field and is worth a lot of money.

Arisaig will run in the mile fillies’ handicap on the first day. She has had a good season and ran really well in the Sandringham when drawn on the wrong side of the track. She met quite bit of trouble in running but she stayed on well to finish eighth and I though she backed that up with a third place at Newmarket. She is a filly we have always thought plenty of and there is still room to manoeuvre with her mark and she will be reunited with Jamie Spencer who was banned for the July Festival.

The plan is to go to the meeting but there are three-year-old handicaps over ten, 11 and 12 furlongs and I’m not sure which one he will go for yet. He won nicely at Ayr last time out and the step up to a mile and a quarter seemed to bring up a bit of improvement. He won with a bit more in hand than the margin suggested at Ayr, and I would like to think he will build on that. He has only had five runs and there is not much form to go on, but he might prefer some cut in the ground.

She will probably run in the mile and a quarter fillies’ handicap. She is a nice filly who ran well on her reappearance at Kempton by a horse of Ralph Beckett’s who won the King George V at Ascot. That form looks very strong, and Joe just felt she didn’t stay when she ran a mile and a half at Goodwood after that. She had a setback and got cast in her box and banged her knee, so she has had quite a bit of time off. We have been focusing and this race has been her target for quite a few weeks now. She worked on Thursday morning and worked well and hopefully the mile and a quarter will see her bounce back.

Similar comments apply to Baileys Jubilation as to those of Where’s Clare. She got the mark at Lingfield last time and the third, trained by the Crisfords, won very impressively at Beverley last week. She is a filly with a lot of speed

He runs in the six-furlong maiden on Tuesday. He is a nice horse who came from the Arqana Breeze-Ups. We had his half-sister last year What A Question and she won on her debut over six furlongs at Goodwood so he definitely has the pedigree for this test. There will be a few horses in there that have already had a run or two and shown a good level of form, but he is a nice horse and I like him. I would be hopeful he would show up well.

There is a six-furlong nursery on Friday I and I would say Shazani will probably run in that. Back to a sharp six like this will suit him well and he could be joined by a filly KISS ME MY LOVE

We have a few entered up in the two-year-old maiden on Saturday but the most obvious one is Sir Peter Fossick. He ran a very nice race at Epsom and was just a little bit green on the camber and the track in the closing stages and just got caught close home. The first two came a long way clear and that experience should set him up well for the test at Goodwood. He is a colt we have always liked.

There are a few in the mix for the seven-furlong nursery but Substitute is most likely to run. She won on her debut at Ripon very impressively and wasn’t able to concede a penalty to another couple of smart fillies on her second start. Then I thought ran with credit in the Albany when she finished in midfield. I think an easy seven like this will suit and I think the handicapper has been fair with a mark of 79. I would like to think she is a well-handicapped filly. She could be joined by maybe ANTHROPOLOGIST.

We will have a few entered in the Alice Kepple and Where’s Clare won at Wolverhampton then finished down the field in the Queen Mary. I thought she ran fine in a decent nursery last time and I suspect there will be a few fillies in there rated higher than her, but she is a filly with a lot of speed and a fast five furlongs down the hill might suit her well.
