HEAD OF STATE (8) was onto heavy ground and off a long break when failing to fire at Rosehill. Went back to the trials and started again. The result was a much better effort up to 2000m last time and he can be much better for having that run now. This time last year he won the Gloaming and started 7/2 in the Spring Champion. PROTECTION MONEY (9) has built a lovely platform for this campaign with three strong runs back from a break having him right to go now. Key chance. GLOBAL GIFT (1) continues to race well and should press forward into the first few along with FENGARADA (3) who is also in terrific form at the moment. Relishing heavy ground and things might not be so ideal for him now but have to respect one coming off a win as dominant as he was at Sandown last time.

LASCARS (3) is yet to get off the mark but he has shown glimpses of talent and he has bumped into a couple of smart winners this time around. Giga Kick stitched him up fresh at Flemington and then he found what looks another hot horse in a Geelong maiden. Up in class but this might actually prove easier to win. XTRAVAGANT STAR (6) won her first two starts including the valuable Inglis Millenium up in Sydney. Pulled up with excuses behind Fireburn on a heavy track before a break. Clearly very talented. PORT ALBERT (4) is another talented maiden that has a shot. He was behind CANNONBALL (1) around here on debut in April and has a good chance to turn the tables with Cannonball having failed to fire in two this time. This is easier for him though. Betting around the first starter SWEETENED (10) will be interesting off a pair of winning jump outs.

AFT CABIN (2) bumped into one of the better three-year-old performances of the season in the McNeil. Winner there was too good but it was a strong race and Aft Cabin stood right up in it having been stepped up sharply in grade following a most impressive Sandown display. That win was at 1400m and a return to the trip for this will only suit. Hardest for him to beat can be OSIPENKO (1) who won nicely on debut before being held out by a subsequent Group winner at start number two. Leaves him with a lovely profile for this. AMENABLE (7) didn't have much luck first up. Had plenty to offer when clear and the debut hinted at him being smart. JAPANESE EMPEROR (8) won nicely on debut and is among several potential improvers in a hot race.

With clear running from there he looks a terrific chance of following up his return win in the lead up around here which returned a good rating. Showed good promise last season but could be ready to really put it together now. UNCLE BRYN (14) couldn't reel in a fast winner around the Valley but he ran really well off a sound return and 2000m can be what he is looking for now. GOLD TRIP (1) caught they on at his belated Australian debut. Seven weeks since and he may just need one more having done so little racing in recent times but he has A1 form in the book and looks a chance in bigger and better races than this. Placings in the Hobartville and the Randwick Guineas in the Autumn read well for this and he was back at that level when close up in the Winx last time. AYRTON (8) had excuses in the Hollindale and away from that run his form has been extremely consistent. Four from four at Caulfield and two of those have come fresh at 1400m. Targeted here. ZAPATEO (2) was no match in the Concorde last time but she was right up against there, chasing one of the best sprinters on the planet in a perfect storm (literally) for him. Previously second-up keen; raced on the speed and boxed on steadily 3rd of 9 at Flemington Vgold Comet on March 19 over 1000m, 2 len behind Express Pass carrying 53kg at $17. Fitter but must improve sharply.

Last week was a good one in Melbourne for Brisbane-based geldings and perhaps that trend can continue through PRINCE OF BOOM (3) here who was not able to give his running around the Valley last time but the pattern of the day wasn't exactly with him from his wide draw there and this might set up better. His best form reads well. Can say the same of INGRATIATING (2) who has had a frustrating 12 months since his last win which came in the Vain around this C&D. Wide draw might send him right back. At the other end of the map is IN THE BOAT (1) who was a touch disappointing first up but he is a good deal better than that and can improve now. ROSE QUARTZ (12) is talented and draws to get a cheap run stalking the pace. Terrific win last prep and her best ratings are in the mix here.
