Expert Analysis
A rather puzzling race, at least from a form point of view, with the two main fancies not at their best and Greaneteen winning in a time markedly slower than the novice Edwardstone managed in the previous race, the early pace lukewarm in this contest but the closing sectionals less than impressive also (about 96% race finishing speed). It could be that second and third have improved, but it seems at least as likely that the winner did not have to be at his very best to score with authority.
GREANETEEN (c162+ here, 168 previously) duly came on plenty for his run at Exeter but might not have needed to be at his absolute best to win a race in which his two main form rivals bombed out, kept a bit wide and a few lengths back until closing after 4 out, going on for sure 2 out and driven out on the run-in. He was fourth in last season’s Champion Chase and there are probably a few still ahead of him in what is a strong division.
HITMAN (c154 here and previously) ran at least as well as previously and would have been a clearer second had he jumped 2 out better, mostly in second until leading narrowly 3 out, sticking to his task after his error. This effort may make life in handicaps difficult for him (he ran off 151 at Exeter), and more is needed at the elite level.
CAPTAIN GUINNESS (c154 here and previously) ran at least creditably, his jumping standing up to this test well, held up last but in touch, closing 3 out and keeping on for pressure. Most of his form leaves him with something to find at the top level.
NUBE NEGRA (c145 here, 168 previously) ran poorly, perhaps not at his best after a quicker turn-around than usual, tracking the pace and looking a threat 3 out but short of room soon after and finding little after a mistake at the second-last. He won at Kempton last Christmas on ground similar to this, so that should not have been an issue.
CHACUN POUR SOI (c115 here, 176 previously) turned in an uncharacteristically lacklustre effort, clearly not himself for whatever reason, leading at an unexacting pace, none too fluent at times, and beaten in strides after 3 out, eased. He is unlikely to be getting better at his age, but this was simply too bad to be true.
