C&D winner CAPTAIN BERTIE ran a cracker from out of the weights on his reappearance at Sandown, when beaten by less than a length into second, and is effectively racing off a 2lb lower mark today now back within the handicap proper. Kingscroft would be dangerous if granted a soft lead from his low draw, while First Class Favour, who progressed nicely over 7f late last year, is also considered although his fitness does have to be taken on trust.
C&D winner Captain Bertie was a long way clear of the rest when taking another step forward in the Esher Cup at Sandown on his recent reappearance and will be a tough nut to crack off a 2 lb lower mark. Fred Willetts could prove the chief threat ahead of Belle Royale.

Distant Memories will be interesting if Jamie Spencer tries to steal this from the front but his best form has come on slower ground and so AWAIT THE DAWN is preferred. Aidan O'Brien's colt remains open to further improvement over this trip and has winning form on a fast surface. Critical Moment can give him most to think about as he will relish the quick ground and looked in need of this far when outpaced over a mile at Ascot recently.
It was hard not to be impressed with Await The Dawn's runaway success at Leopardstown last autumn and he looks the type to develop into a Group 1 performer in the coming months. He can overcome his penalty here at the main expense of Forte Dei Marmi, who is better than he showed on his Newmarket reappearance.

SLUMBER left his debut running behind when sauntering to victory on his reappearance at Epsom and Barry Hills' colt will be suited by the sharp nature of the track. He is narrowly preferred to Treasure Beach, who was steamrollered by Frankel in the Royal Lodge when last sighted but is expected to improve over this longer trip. Nathaniel won with ease in a moderate Haydock contest last time and makes most appeal of the remainder.
Nathaniel looks the type to take the step up to this level in his stride and is preferred to Epsom winner Slumber and Mark Johnston's Sadler's Risk.

Sea Odyssey showed up well when third on his debut at Windsor last month and has every chance if he can cross over from his wide position but, at the likely odds, it might be worth opposing him with the handily-drawn LORD ALI MCJONES, who attracted money when third on his debut at Wolverhampton, a performance upon which he is entitled to build. Gabrial looks the pick of the Richard Fahey-trained duo and is another to consider.
Plenty of interesting newcomers, of whom Gabrial looks the pick, but Sea Odyssey sets a decent standard on form and can put his experience to good use. Lord Ali McJones is also worth considering from a good draw.

BEACHFIRE is expected to strip fitter for his recent comeback run at Epsom and is taken to resume his improvement over middle distances this season on what is only his seventh career start. C&D winner Thin Red Line is sliding back down the weights and went well fresh last season but a greater threat is posed by Changing The Guard, who is handicapped to strike at any point and will relish the quick ground. Jutland looks a lively outsider for the in-form Mark Johnston team.
Thin Red Line fought a losing battle with the handicapper after winning over this C&D at this meeting on his reappearance last year, but he could be worth chancing to strike again having dropped in the weights in the meantime. Beachfire and Changing The Guard are unlikely to be far away, either.

STEPS looks the sort that could make an impact in some valuable handicaps against his own age group this season and the form of his maiden success at Wolverhampton was rubber-stamped in emphatic fashion by the runner-up on Monday, strengthening the claims of Roger Varian's representative today. Oneladyowner has a fitness advantage over many of these rivals and warrants respect after his victory at Windsor last month. Handicap debutant Robert The Painter is another for the shortlist.
Lexi's Hero looked an improved performer at Pontefract on his reappearance and still seems on a good mark. This sharp track should suit him down to the ground and he's fancied to get the better of Robert The Painter and Crimson Knot.

Norman Orpen looks well treated on turf and hinted in the Spring Mile (when a staying-on fifth) that a step up in trip would be warranted. Pekan Star is afforded plenty of respect on his seasonal bow but it is fellow handicap debutant NIBANI that gets the vote, having rattled the crossbar when a short-head second in a Windsor maiden last month. At a likely bigger price, dual course winner Inspirina is expected to go well but his fitness does have to be taken on trust.
Twice-raced Pekan Star is open to plenty of improvement and can make a winning start to life in handicaps. Satwa Moon is a reliable type in this grade and can reach the frame, while it is unlikely that we have seen the best of Nibani just yet.
