Paul Nicholls sent out a couple of winners last month and FASOL could prove good enough to defy a penalty. The maiden hurdle winner finished a determined third in a tough handicap at Sandown in April and looks to have solid claims back in novice company on the strength of that form. Frontier Prince went close at Uttoxeter on his hurdling bow and is likely to prove competitive, while Karonacho is worthy of consideration on his first start over timber.
The Fergal O'Brien horses are running well at present, and the yard's FRONTIER PRINCE could make 2nd time lucky over hurdles after a decent 2nd on hurdle debut in May. A winner of a Kempton bumper back in February, he ran very well over hurdles at the first attempt when coming 2nd at Uttoxeter and was only beaten by a neck in the end behind a horse who then went on to win again and is now rated 119. That is pretty decent form, and he did push that horse all the way to the line; therefore, with the hurdling experience under his belt, he could make it 2nd time lucky over obstacles. Fasol will have plenty of backers given the yard he hails from; with 1 win in 9 over hurdles, he has plenty of experience to boot compared to most of these but does have to carry a winning penalty and can be a bit of a tricky ride; therefore, a placed effort could be on the cards here. And Karonacho came 2nd on his racecourse debut at Uttoxeter back in November 2024, a 6th-place effort at this venue, since he does look the sort to be better over hurdles, starting with this contest here.

TASHAN won twice in junior hurdles last year and could prove the one to side with on his reappearance. The convincing winner at Taunton when last in action, he should have plenty more to offer as a four-year-old and Harry Cobden's presence is another positive. Second in a bumper at Bellewstown, Doctors Hill debuts over timber with a shout having subsequently switched yards, while Blue Carpet and Arcadian Star are others to keep an eye on.
The real "could be anything" in the field is MASKED MAN for the Twiston-Davies team, who was a pretty impressive winning pointer back in May. He was a little green in the closing stages of that race; therefore, he has since been gelded and looks to be a smart prospect over hurdles given his connections. The yard are in cracking form at present, and the owner retained rider JJ Slevin heads over for the ride; he is also riding in pretty good form at present. This sort of trip definitely looks like it will suit, and any rain before the race will be welcomed by connections. Doctors Hill placed in a bumper at Bellewstown back in April; he has since transferred to the Hobbs and White stable and looks to be one of quite a few nice recruits to the novice hurdling sphere for the yard. He is sure to be ready and go well on his hurdle debut for a yard that tends to do well at this meeting. And Blue Carpet could be worth a second look; a winner on his racecourse debut at Carlisle back in October, he then went on to back that up with a few decent efforts after that. He is sure to be ready to go on his hurdling debut and can land a place here before kicking on as the season progresses.

SOMESPRING SPECIAL makes plenty of appeal on the back of last month's close third at Fontwell. That was her first outing after a wind operation and she could prove capable of winning off her current mark with further improvement a distinct possibility. Springs A Girl returns to the fray with a fine effort at Worcester and this longer trip shouldn't be an issue, while Lahinch Wave and Lady Jago also enter calculations.
SOMESPRING SPECIAL had the season pipe opener at Fontwell last time out when coming 3rd of 6 runners; that was also her first run after the wind operation. Therefore, she is sure to come on wonders for that run from last time. A winner at Wincanton on debut for Hobbs and White last March, she then went on to place twice after that in two smaller field handicap contests. With this race being similar to those and her having her 2nd run of the season after the wind operation, she could be hard to stop in this before progressing as the season goes on. Lahinch Wave has only had the one run over fences, which was last time out at Worcester when sent off as the 15/8 favourite, so there was clear confidence for her. She could only manage a 4th place finish but was always staying on well and would have learnt a fair bit from that. A better run is expected here, but she might have to settle for a place finish. And Springs A Girl also had her chase debut last time out, coming 2nd of 4 runners at Worcester. She is sure to come on for the run and can run into a place once again in this contest.

The Mickey Bowen stable can do little wrong at present and COURTLAND has every chance of getting his head back in front. Runner-up in the Summer Plate in July, the 10-year-old is narrowly preferred to Lord Accord, who was a promising second at Cartmel last time out and only last November was placed in the Badger Beer off 5lb higher. A taking winner at Fakenham when last seen in May, for which he has been raised 3lb, Le Milos completes the shortlist with the capable Torn And Frayed.
With race fitness on his side, which can be huge this time of year, COURTLAND could be the answer in this wide-open veterans chase. His last victory came back in March 2024 when landing a class 3 handicap at Hereford; he has since gone on to place 3 times after being off the track for a good period of time. A 3rd on his return at Cartmel when finding the track a little sharp, he then went on to come 2nd at Market Rasen and finally a 3rd at Worcester last time out in the middle of September. Now into the veterans series for the first time, we could see him winning a few races, with this one being the starting point. Le Milos landed a veterans contest at Fakenham on his last start of last season, dotting up to win by a little under 6 lengths in the end. He could be a force in this sphere but is having his first run in 157 days here in this contest. And Torn And Frayed is sure to come on for the run but was a winner on similar conditions at Warwick back in November of last year; he can run well on seasonal debut before kicking on as the season progresses once again.

QUEENSBURY BOY may have been outclassed when last seen at the Punchestown Festival in Grade 1 company, but that was just his third start in this sphere and connections clearly think plenty of him. An easy winner at Newbury and Doncaster before that, Harry Derham's charge sets the standard ahead of Sticktotheplan, who is now in the hands of Olly Murphy after a taking success over shorter at Galway in July. An easy winner last month at Newton Abbot, Jack Hyde is another with potential for improvement on the step back up in trip.
An intriguing contest to say the least, it has shown in recent years to pay with the race-fit horses, which can be said for every race at this time of year given the fact it's early season, and with that in mind, KAINSBOURG could be the answer for Gordon Elliott and James Bowen. Last seen winning a novice hurdle contest at Listowel last time out when staying on very well in the closing stages to win by half a length in the end, he beat a potentially nice horse that day of Ross O'Sullivan's who was 2 for 2 over hurdles. Yet to test his hand in this sort of company, conditions will suit, and with race fitness on his side, he can be the one to outrun the potentially big odds for a powerful yard who do well at this time of year. Queensbury Boy has gained a whole lot of followers with connections suggesting he will take a whole lot of beating in this race, and this has been the plan for a while. He looks the part on paper and did very well last season, but does have a 161-day break to overcome here against one or two race-fit rivals. And Sticktotheplan makes his stable debut for Olly Murphy after running in Ireland for previous connections. He is sure to go well on a stable debut with conditions there to suit.

A chance can be taken with DOUBLE POWERFUL, who excelled himself over hurdles last season and could be a strong recruit to the chasing sphere. Placed in valuable spring handicaps at Kempton and Aintree, the son of Ocovango remains unexposed at staying trips and the 10lb he gets from the in-form Art Of Diplomacy, who has won five of his last six, may prove crucial. Narrowly getting up to score at Worcester last month, Coco Mademoiselle continues to thrive over fences and has to be a threat to all.
A decent little novice chase on paper, Dan Skelton will be chasing all the early prize money he can get in his quest to become champion trainer, and his runner COCO MADEMOISELLE could be the answer in this. Running over fences last season, connections have found a loophole which means she can still contest in these novice contests, and this looks like a good opportunity for her to make it 4 wins in 9 runs over the larger obstacles. She did scrape home at Worcester last time out, but that was her first run in a few months, and she is sure to have come on nicely for that. Running off the same mark here as last time, with race fitness now on her side, she is the one they all have to beat. Double Powerful has a healthy strike rate over hurdles, and he makes his chase debut for an in-form team in this. Rated 134 as a hurdler, if he is anything near as effective over fences here, then he is sure to run well on debut and progress as the season kicks on. And Welcom To Cartries did run in two graded chases last December, running well to an extent; those two tracks might not have suited him, therefore he is set to run a bit better here now down in class and back over fences. There was plenty to like about Lundi Noir's winning debut at Market Rasen last season. However, the four-year-old's lack of experience could prove telling on his handicap bow and RAZZLE DAZZLE BOY is slightly more appealing. Having finished his last campaign with a decent second over an extended 2m at Newbury, the son of Hillstar is bred to relish this step up in trip. Last-time-out winners Activist and The Magus are the pick of the remainder.
A huge field with an incredibly competitive field, KINGSTON GENT looks the sort to appreciate this and finally get his head in front for the very first time. A winning pointer, he seemingly came on with each passing run over hurdles last season and ended the term with a decent enough 2nd place finish at Fontwell back in April, not all that far beaten in the end. Upped 2 lbs in the weights after that effort, he sneaks into this off a decent weight, and with his yard doing very well at this meeting in the past, it could be worth siding with this unexposed runner in this contest. Jorah has only had the three runs over hurdles; a 2nd in a maiden hurdle contest at Worcester in June. He does come into this off a decent mark and could be the sort to now progress in this sort of company. He is the pick of Harry Skelton, and the team will be looking to pick up every bit of prize money on offer in the early part of the season. And Old Bridge has plenty of racing experience over hurdles and is trained by the man this race is named after; therefore, he is sure to very much be primed and ready to go here in this.

A switch to more aggressive tactics saw SWEET CARYLINE making all at Newton Abbot in May. Joe Tizzard's mare scored with something in hand and is fancied to defy a 5lb higher mark on her return from a break. Jackeline found only a subsequent winner too strong on her final outing last season at Hereford and she's likely to be in the mix if performing to a similar level, while market support for either Conniemak or La Belle Argentee on their handicap debut would be interesting.
LA BELLE ARGENTEE came 4th on debut in a junior novice hurdle, looking a little novicey throughout with her jumping. She then backed that up with a nice 2nd place finish in a mares novice hurdle at Newton Abbot back in September, making nice headway in the later stages of the race before just getting outstayed by the eventual winner of David Pipe's. She comes into this with an opening mark of 102, and the fact connections have decided to chance their arm in handicap company so early would suggest they feel the opening mark can be exploited. She is a nice young horse who could easily progress with each passing run still. Sweet Caryline was a winner of a mares handicap hurdle last time out; with just the 5 lb raise in the weights, she is sure to go well on this but does have the 156-day break to overcome here. And Roaring Home came 2nd at Warwick in May after her first run after wind surgery. This is her second run since that operation, but she does have a little break to overcome in this, which means she might be worth keeping an eye on after this run and as the season progresses.
