Expert Analysis
A race with a mixed record as a Derby trial, to say the least, won by the best Derby winner of them all in Shergar in 1981, also by that year’s Derby winner Ruler of The World in 2013, but also with some unexceptional names on its Roll of Honour. Lambourn probably falls somewhere in the middle, a very useful colt who may have further improvement in him, but not in the top echelon just yet. The pace was uneven, pretty strong for the first few furlongs then steady through the middle part, the winner’s 24.66s for the final 2f on well-watered ground that was between “good to soft” and “good” resulting in a 104.2% finishing speed.
LAMBOURN (110 here and previously) is improving as he gains experience and goes up in trip, very useful in victory here but needing most of the added distance to put his seal on the race. He was pushed along early (initially a bit wide then settled in 3rd) and again fully 5f out, staying on well to get in front with 150 yards to go. More will be needed to get placed in an average Derby but not quite so much to do the same in a St Leger.
LAZY GRIFF (108 here, 105 previously) ran well, likely improving a bit further on his G3 success at Chantilly last year, up in the air as he left his stall but soon close up travelling comfortably and leading briefly approaching the final 1f.
CONVERGENT (105 here, 97+ previously) faced a much stiffer task than for his 2 wins at Redcar and acquitted himself well, leading/disputing until approaching the final 1f. He showed a fair bit of speed here but should eventually stay well.
PINHOLE (94 here, 91+ previously)
FURTHUR (94 here and previously)
THRICE (86 here, 100 previously)
FAIRE LA NOUBA (86? here, 56 previously)
SQUARE D’ALBONI (84 here, 107 previously)
