Sue Smith may have decided to bypass a King George VI Chase engagement with Midnight Shadow but even at this early stage she can reflect on a highly successful 2021-22 campaign.
Midnight Shadow has clearly been the standard bearer with his victory in the Grade 3 Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham in November leading connections to contemplate the major Boxing Day prize and his £90,032 winning made a rude contribution to the £209,188 accrued so far.
The Bingley trainer is no stranger to the big days with Auroras Encore landing the Grand National at Aintree in 2013 and only last March a current stable stalwart Vintage Clouds was making his own waves when taking the Grade 3 Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
Sue’s 14 winners so far put her only six away from her total of 20 winners for the previous two seasons and, amongst the mix, she has some nice young prospects from whom more will be heard in the future.
Sue kindly talked to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about those she hopes can further enhance the Craiglands Farm team’s fortunes over a busy Christmas period and beyond.
