Ben Pauling smashed through the £1 million pound prize money barrier in 2034-24 and there would be few doubters that one of the rising stars of the National Hunt training ranks will not continue in the ascendancy this time around.
The Naunton Downs trainer notched up 76 winners for his total of £1,181,493 which numerically was four short of his personal best of 80 the previous season but the significant factor in his total was the notable increase in quality of his team.
Shakem Up’arry gave Pauling another coveted Festival win when landing the Plate Handicap Chase but there was also a Grade 2 Aintree success with the very classy Diva Luna in the Mares’ Bumper and Henry’s Friend (Reynoldstown Chase), Personal Ambition (Premier Novices’ Hurdle) were also contributors at that level.
Just for good measure, Champagne Twist took the EBF Final at Sandown, Handstands landed the Listed Sidney Banks Hurdle at Huntingdon and there were plenty of other success in valuable contests.
Ben starts the season with what looks an even stronger team, and he kindly talked to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about some cracking prospects for the months ahead.
