THE PEN won on her hurdling debut over C&D recently (Toss The Caber finished runner-up), and although upped in class could be good enough to follow-up. Pat Haslam's charge won on the Flat on a soft surface so should not be inconvenienced by the ground, and has the added assistance of Tony McCoy today. Ex-French import Twist Magic is now with Paul Nicholls and could prove the biggest danger.

Le Passing's last two victories have come on heavy ground, so the more rain the better for Paul Nicholls' six-year-old. He has some solid form to his name but disappointed last time and is passed over today in favour of QUAZAR. Jonjo O'Neill's gelding was a top class hurdler, and is starting to make his mark over the bigger obstacles, having won a Grade 2 event at Cheltenham on his penultimate start.

Verdict

This could rest between Crystal d'Ainay and INGLIS DREVER. The latter won the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at the Festival in good style, and should confirm superiority over the former, who never ran his race that day and was pulled up. Alan King's charge is still a class act, however, and there may not be much between the pair today on their seasonal reappearances. Brewster is another decent stayer, who is thoroughly genuine, and will not go down without a fight.

Verdict

Kingscliff did not jump well on his reappearance when finishing fourth to Kicking King at Punchestown, but he is better than that, and should be there or thereabouts today in this intriguing contest. GREY ABBEY, whose only defeat last season came in the Gold Cup, is getting better with age, is better on flat tracks such as this, and can follow-up his win in this event last year. Ollie Magern is another classy individual who could capitalise on any mistakes by the two principals.

Darina's Boy is improving over these bigger obstacles, won in good style at Market Rasen last time, and should not be far away, while Your Advantage won at Hexham recently, but that was over a shorter trip and on firmer ground.
