John Gosden's charge kept good company last summer and could find this a more suitable assignment than the Prince of Wales's Stakes and Eclipse he's contested the last twice. Our Channel has progressed through the all-weather ranks over the winter and, with match fitness in his favour, can battle it out with the penalised My Dream Boat, a Group 3 winner in France, for the silver medal.

BELARDO built on his second to Solow on Champions Day at Ascot last October when comfortably brushing aside some fair rivals in the Doncaster Mile last month on really testing ground. The son of Lope De Vega appreciates softer going which he gets here and should also get a decent pace to aim at with his 80-rated stablemate Barchan looking the most likely front runner, plus Toormore, who also likes to go forward. The latter appears to be the main threat to the selection, even with a Group Two penalty thanks to his wins at Goodwood and Veliefendi in Turkey. Dutch Connection has solid claims on the pick of his three-year-old form but there are concerns about softer ground for him, while Adaay has stamina questions to answer as he tackles a mile for the first time.

Sign Of The Kodiac should go well from stall one but he needs to transfer his improvement on the all-weather to turf. Recent Nottingham winner WILLYTHECONQUEROR handled plenty of cut in the ground when successful on that occasion and a 5lb rise in the ratings does not look too harsh. Riflescope won a Listed race over C&D last July but he needs to prove himself on the ground, while Ticking Away has looked to be an exciting prospect at Southwell recently but he has been beating moderate rivals and this is more demanding.

The filly that beat Shall We and Pleasure Dome at Chelmsford in November had previously finished well behind High Hopes at Newbury the month before. Obviously that form cannot be taken literally, with these fillies being entitled to improve over the winter, but it gives the chances of the David Simcock representative a boost. However, she could be facing a potentially top-class performer as there are a whole host of interesting newcomers. TAQAAREED is a full-sister to the Oaks and King George winner Taghrooda and comes from a top Aga Khan line. Eyeshine is out of another Oaks winner in Casual Look and connections had to part with $1.45 million to secure the Dubawi filly as a yearling. Both Eyeshine and Taqaareed represent John Gosden and the market could be the best guide to expectations of that pair. Final Stage is a half-sister to the St Leger winner Mastery, while Taffeta Lady is a half-sister to the three-time Listed winner Seta from the family of Barathea.

A highly competitive event to close the card as there are plenty of unexposed types who are entitled to improve for another winter. The marginal preference goes to LOVELL, who should appreciate some cut in the ground and he only found the subsequent Craven winner Stormy Antarctic too good here in a maiden last August. Since then he easily accounted for a field at Thirsk and he looks sure to have improved from two to three. Gambit took a decent maiden apart at Wolverhampton last month and an opening mark of 88 may well underestimate his ability. Gershwin improved with every start last season and is another feature upon the shortlist with the likes of Dal Harraild, Harrison, Paris Protocol and Stargazer. The latter is a half-brother to Stravagante, who was third in this contest 12 months ago behind Jack Hobbs.
