A competitive handicap hurdle opens the card and having won with plenty in hand at Ffos Las in early October, SENTIMENTALJOURNEY is taken to follow-up despite a 6lb rise in the ratings. Maurice Linehan takes off 8lb in the saddle and if the Jonjo O'Neill charge can reproduce that form, he is likely to take some stopping. The similarly unexposed Cotillion makes his handicap debut off a mark of 119 and could be a factor, while keep an eye on Trafalgar Road, who returns from a 694-day absence, and Kings Troop, who represents the in-form Alan King.
Sentimentaljourney duly improved for a stiffer stamina test when making a winning start in handicaps last month and remains on a workable mark. Trafalgar Road goes well fresh and could prove a threat on his belated return, whilst Amirico is another interesting one starting out for Lawney Hill.

In a race that often seems to attract a small field, Paul Nicholls is taken to repeat last year's win, this time with his French recruit PACHA DU POLDER. Winning form at Enghien in March on ground described as very soft bodes well and his new trainer has made it no secret to how well he has worked at home. The dual Swinton Hurdle winner Eradicate must concede weight but is unlikely to go down without a fight given what he has shown on the Flat and over timber.
Just the 2 runners, but a contest not short on intrigue with the very smart hurdler Eradicate taking on the well regarded Pacha du Polder on their respective chase debuts. Preference is for the former.

Volcan Surprise brings some useful French hurdles form to the table on his debut for Alan King but the gelded son of Dom Alco looks plenty short at the forecast prices and a chance is taken on CAPTAIN SHARPE. The Barry Llewellyn charge has quickly earned a rating of 115 over timber and while forced to carry a penalty in this juvenile hurdle, experience is expected to count for plenty. Of the newcomers, Mentalist makes most appeal for Venetia Williams.
Volcan Surprise showed ability in a couple of French juvenile hurdles, and having joined Alan King, it's reasonable to expect improvement, but costly Flat recruit Mentalist is preferred. Kambis is another interesting newcomer to hurdling.

Songe landed this prize 12 months ago for Charlie Longsdon and returns off the same mark. It would be dangerous to completely rule him out but preference is for ROUDOUDOU VILLE. Victor Dartnall and Denis O'Regan can boast a useful record at this time of year and are a combination worth keeping an eye on. The six-year-old wasn't at all disgraced behind Door Boy at Perth latest and the slight drop in class is expected to bring about a return to winning ways. Midnight Appeal is another to be wary of now stepping into the handicap ranks.
Frankie Figg and Roudoudou Ville have to be respected, but Midnight Appeal looked a chaser going places when rattling off a 4-timer earlier in the year and is one to keep on the right side on his reappearance.

The step back up in trip is expected to bring about further improvement off a similar mark but in what looks a competitive heat on paper, the Philip Hobbs pair, Tony Star and Pateese command the utmost respect. The quick ground at Cheltenham may have got the better of Earth Planet in October but now eased 2lb in the ratings, the Paul Nicholls charge is worth another look on an easier surface. The ultra-consistent Hold On Julio is another to be wary of but the eight-year-old is entitled to come on for this run and, for that reason, VERY STYLISH is taken to produce the goods. The Jonjo O'Neill charge proved he was some way ahead of the assessor at Ffos Las in June when justifying odds-on favouritism and despite a hefty 17lb hike in the ratings, AP's mount can continue on an upward curve.
