This might not take a great deal of winning and it looks a reasonable opportunity for ABSINTHE to get back in the groove. He has twice come up short since scoring readily on his hurdling debut at Bangor in January but last month's close third to Lyvius was another step in the right direction and further improvement is expected. Makbullet shapes like he may appreciate more of a test, while the same can be said of recent Ayr runner-up Jet Master.
Absinthe is the one to beat for an in-form trainer-jockey combination but he showed signs of temperament on the Flat and may be worth taking on with Makbullet, who has shown enough ability to win a race like this and is also from a yard amongst the winners. Samstown finished a place behind a McCain runner last time and a similar fate awaits.

Chester Lad is respected if none the worse for his heavy fall at Musselburgh last month but marginal preference is for MAGGIO. He, too, failed to complete the course last time out, when unseating Brian Hughes at this track, but his previous Musselburgh win over 2m4f was particularly impressive in the context of this event and he'll take a bit of pegging back if allowed to dictate. Degas Art was a long way behind Chester Lad at Newcastle in January but could bridge the gap back on decent ground today.
None of the quartet can be ruled out but Chester Lad may be open to a bit more improvement over fences and gets the nod despite last month's Musselburgh spill. Maggio is also on a retrieval mission and looks the main threat.

Lucy Alexander is riding with real confidence at present and she clearly gets on very well with RED TANBER, having partnered Bruce Mactaggart's gelding to victory four times this season. The nine-year-old keeps on defying the handicapper and having done the job in fine style at Musselburgh last month, another 6lb rise in the ratings may not be enough to prevent another victory. Polar Gunner and Freddie Brown both know what's required to win here and the latter is of particular interest back on decent ground having landed a bumper on good to firm here in May 2010.
Red Tanber and Polar Gunner are both likely to make bold bids. However, it may pay to side with Freddie Brown who has shown promise on both outings over fences and remains open to further improvement.

Captain Conan was disappointing in the Grade 1 Deloitte Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown last month following his short-head triumph in the Tolworth at Sandown and, with that in mind, it could pay to side with TAP NIGHT. Lucinda Russell and Peter Buchanan landed this pot last year with Bold Sir Brian and their son of Pleasant Tap can continue on an upward curve having taken his form to a new level with impressive wins at Carlisle and Newcastle this winter. Into Wain boasts winning form at the track and is another for the shortlist.
An intriguing event featuring a clutch of novices who've yet to show their all, and with Captain Conan having a question mark against his name following Leopardstown, the strong temptation is to side with Ubaltique such was the impression he created at Pau. He's since joined Donald McCain and looks to be very exciting indeed. Tap Night could be best of the remainder.

A slick jumper and dour stayer, Ballabriggs is one of the most popular chasers in training at present, having landed an emotional victory in last year's Grand National for Donald McCain. The 11-year-old's season has been geared around a successful defence of his Aintree crown, however, and after his trainer stated last week his charge would strip fitter for the run, the percentage call is to oppose him in a race he was turned over in at odds on last season. The quirky Master Of The Hall failed to complete on his latest start at Sandown and the vote goes to ACCORDING TO PETE at his expense. Malcolm Jefferson's charge has taken his form to a new level this term, backing up his Rowland Meyrick success by landing the Grade 2 Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock when last sighted. Although he may ideally prefer a bit of cut in the ground, the selection's class could see him through.
Grand National winner Ballabriggs was nailed late on in this 12 months ago and it could be that he'll prove vulnerable again, particularly after his absence, Master of The Hall the one most likely to take advantage of any lack of fitness on his part.

Spellchecker has been running to a fair level of consistency in this sphere lately and holds fair claims on the back of a respectable Musselburgh second latest. Preference, however, is for KILDONNAN, whose last run under Rules came in a relatively strong Wetherby contest, albeit 12 months ago, and who recently advertised his wellbeing with a creditable point-to-point second. Now operating at this level, the selection must be considered a danger to all. Harmony Brig is another returning from a productive spell between the flags and is also worth considering.
Kildonnan showed his well-being between the flags last month and could prove a safer selection than the ungenuine Harmony Brig despite that one's recent pointing success. Spellchecker ought to reach the frame again.
