A competitive race to get proceedings underway and FIENDISH FLAME edges the vote. The top-weight is best known for his chasing exploits, but he ran well in this sphere at Market Rasen in February and will prove difficult to peg back if getting his own way out in front here. His stablemate, Drill Sergeant, oozes class and goes well at the track but Knight In Purple is most feared on the back of his ready success at Chepstow a couple of weeks ago.
Though coming here on the back of a good run, the question of temperament is never far away with Drill Sergeant, and it wouldn't be a surprise if the likeable Fiendish Flame did the better of the Donald McCain pair. However, in a race in which there are question marks over most, it may pay to take a chance on Dominican Monk, who's well treated if his in-form trainer can get him back.

ASTURIENNE was progressing nicely over fences prior to struggling in a Listed event at Newbury four weeks ago and this drop in grade should see the bottom weight bounce back to form. Ballyvesey ran right up to his best when scoring gamely at Ffos Las most recently and he should go close if in the same mood here, while Towcester winner Sonny Mullen cannot be left out of calculations despite an 8lb rise in the handicap.
Several of these have to prove themselves on a quick surface, with River d'Or and French recruit Renard entering the reckoning if they do, but Ballyvesey has no worries on that score and could follow up his Ffos Las win.

Categorical arguably produced his best effort yet when placed in a Listed event at Aintree last time and a repeat performance is sure to see him go close today, but Ferdy Murphy's WATCH MY BACK looks the one to beat. This past C&D winner made light work of landing a competitive handicap at Ayr recently and an 8lb rise may not be enough to prevent him from going in again. Fontwell winner Alderley Rover is worthy of consideration.
There's no looking beyond Watch My Back after his impressive win at Ayr. Categorical gave his all at Aintree just 2 weeks ago, so the biggest danger may come from Matuhi, especially with the prospect of an easy lead for him.

COMMEMORATION DAY will arrive here full of confidence after striking on his last couple of visits to the racecourse and, despite a further 13lb hike in the handicap, he could take some stopping in his bid to complete the hat-trick. Eyre Square won impressively over hurdles at Hexham latest and warrants respect on his return to chasing duty, while Theatre Dance is more than capable of going close with a clear round of jumping.
Eyre Square stands out in terms of potential in a field of otherwise exposed chasers, and he has given encouragement that he will stay this far. Incentivise has proven stamina, and his record of bit-by-bit progress makes him a big player, while Toby Jug is potentially too well handicapped to ignore.

Top Smart hasn't put a foot wrong in both starts so far this year but needs to find another gear to make it three wins in a row, while A Bridge Too Far rates a leading player on the back of his effortless C&D win last month. The vote, however, goes to HAVINGOTASCOOBYDO. Martin Keighley's gelding has improved leaps and bounds this season and he won with enough in hand at Ludlow most recently to suggest that he could defy a further 12lb rise.
Havingotascoobydo is most progressive, and if taking to the quicker ground seems sure to give a good account. He's marginally preferred to C&D winner A Bridge Too Far and Black Phantom, though the hat-trick seeking Top Smart and Ultravox can't be ruled out either in a very competitive race for the grade.

Darlan could well be worth a second look in the betting market on his racecourse debut for a top yard (won this race in 2009), but SMART RULER gets the vote to put his experience to good use. He left a moderate debut performance well behind when runner-up on the all-weather at Lingfield last time and there should be more to come. No Idea, Boruler and Highrate are others to consider in what could work out to be an above average bumper.
It's not hard to envisage Darlan giving Nicky Henderson another bumper winner first time up, though the promising No Idea should ensure it's no walk in the park. Smart Ruler and Boruler are considered also.
