A competitive handicap in which the Pertemps Final second/third Arpege D'Alene and If In Doubt are expected to figure prominently. The latter was unlucky in running and is very much a player off 4lb higher, while the former is just 3lb higher and the fitting of first-time cheekpieces may eke out some improvement. It's impossible to oppose the unbeaten YORKHILL representing the same connections who won this race 12 months ago with subsequent Champion Hurdle third Nichols Canyon. The six-year-old son of Presenting produced one of the best performances of the week at last month's Cheltenham Festival, readily brushing aside red-hot favourite Yanworth in the Neptune Novices' Hurdle, and this shorter trip on a flatter track will pose no problems whatsoever. Whether he stays hurdling or switches to the larger obstacles, he is a seriously exciting prospect going forward, but there is at least one more big pot to be won with him this season first. Le Prezien has improved throughout this term and comfortably beat off the reopposing The Dutchman in Grade 2 company at Kelso last time. He looks the one for forecast punters, although big runs from Flying Angel and Bello Conti would come as no surprise either.

It will take a brave punter to take on DOUVAN. The Willie Mullins representative has carried all before him this season and he is highly likely to do so once again, with the fences likely to be his biggest dangers. Alisier D'Irlande will be a popular choice for the forecast but this bold front runner could prove to be vulnerable late in the contest, having been softened up by trying to go with Douvan. If the going dries out then The Game Changer's hold up tactics could be perfectly suited for the son of Arcadio to pounce late on and grab second. Whereas if there is still cut in the ground, then Fox Norton would have to be considered. Ballybolley will try and pick up as much place money as possible.

Another contest where a few potential rivals steer clear of a superb festival winner, this time in the shape of THISTLECRACK. Colin Tizzard's hurdler was an astonishing winner of the World Hurdle last month, and it's possible that this will be the last time we see him over the smaller obstacles as he looks set for chasing next season and a tilt at the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Conditions suit the eight-year-old once again and he should put this field to the sword. Different Gravey looks to have improved since last season and has been carefully placed with this race in mind. He should enjoy the slight give in the ground but has a lot to do to get close to the selection, though a solid run could see him become a favourite for all the classy long distances hurdle races next year. Prince of Scars' victory over Alpha Des Obeaux looks impressive on paper but that was on heavy ground and would prefer some overnight rain to go close here for the powerful Gigginstown team. Shaneshill ran a blinder in the RSA at Cheltenham three weeks ago but could be outpaced in this type of contest back over hurdles.

Dr Richard Newland will be disappointed former Grand National winner Pineau De Re failed to make the cut for this year's renewal, but he can gain some slight compensation with BAND OF BLOOD. Dropped 3lb for a below par effort at Cheltenham last time, the son of King's Theatre ran his best on a flatter track at Doncaster when third behind The Last Samuri, beaten 11 lengths, and while he looks to want further than an extended 3m, he looks potentially well treated off his mark. Coologue still looks relatively unexposed over fences having only had five starts over fences and should appreciate the return to today's distance after being beaten over 2m3f in a three-runner race last month at Doncaster. Mystifiable couldn't have been more impressive at Newbury last time but he's now a stone higher in the weights and needs to improve a fair amount. Virak is a victim of his own consistency but should run his race, while Mick Channon's pair Knock House and Warden Hill merit respect for different reasons. The former after an excellent run considering the circumstances at Cheltenham, and the latter who is unexposed over fences but has a year-long absence to overcome.

Last year's winner Many Clouds deserves to be hugely respected, even off top weight, after a campaign which has proven his well-being and his preparation run couldn't have gone any better at Kelso when beating Unioniste easily by 10 lengths. Oliver Sherwood's charge cannot be kept out of the frame with him versatility regarding ground, while runner up Saint Are should give another bold account although he wouldn't appreciate any extra rainfall. Shutthefrontdoor looks to have solid claims again, as does The Druids Nephew was arguably unlucky when falling five out and a 9lb rise shouldn't stop him for being very competitive again. The class horse of the race is Silviniaco Conti, who bounced back after a poor run in the King George at Kempton to slam his rivals in the Ascot Chase over 2m5f by 20 lengths. He's 6lb well in but the big concern surrounding his chances is whether he'll see out the trip. The best handicapped horse now in the race is THE LAST SAMURI who would be 12lb higher if handicapper Phil Smith could change the weights. Kim Bailey won this back in 1990 with Mr Frisk and the son of Flemensfirth should improve again for a real stamina test. Others to consider include Sir Des Champs who was chosen by Ruby Walsh once Bryan Cooper opted to ride First Lieutenant over the rest of the Willie Mullins quartet, Goonyella who has assured stamina, The Romford Pele who is decently handicapped on the pick of his form and, of the outsiders, Vics Canvas could surprise on his Becher Chase run despite being a 13 year old

The former Robert Tyner inmate was only two lengths behind subsequent Grade 1 winner Bleu Et Rouge when second in a Cork maiden in November and chased home subsequent Neptune fourth Bello Conti when runner-up the following month at Clonmel. Automated is expected to go well under Jack Kennedy and is considered the pick of the Gordon Elliott representatives, while Thunder Sheik, who arrives on a hat-trick, Triumph eighth Frodon and Bigmartre, whose shrewd stable were amongst the winners here on Thursday, are others with something to recommend them.
