John McConnell has held a trainer’s licence for over 20 years, but in the last six years he has lifted his performance up several notches and has risen up the training ranks.
A qualified vet, McConnell is a dual-purpose trainer that is not shy about travelling his horses to the UK. He has saddled a notable range of winners across the Irish Sea at a strike rate that would be the envy of many.
He has won a range of Grade 2 races over jumps in recent seasons with horses such as Make Good, Mahler Mission, Anna Bunina and Fennor Cross. Indeed, the last-named performer went on to give him a memorable first victory at the Cheltenham Festival when winning the Magners Plate Handicap Chase in 2023.
John sat down with Kevin Blake of attheraces.com to discuss his upwardly-mobile team.
