Assam Black brings some respectable bumper form to the table and is clearly held in high regard at home, while McCabe Creek represents an in-form yard but he'll need to brush up in the jumping department. This could be between GAITWAY and Urubu D'irlande, though, and slight preference is for the former. Nicky Henderson's charge created a deep impression when winning his bumper at Newbury in March and he's expected to have been fully wound up in preparation for his seasonal and hurdling debut. Paul Nicholls' charge beat a useful form yardstick in Oscar Rock on his Taunton debut, though, and isn't easily passed over.

Top Tip: Gaitway (2)
Watch out for: Urubu D'irlande (4)

A small field but still a very interesting race. Gaitway could hardly have made a more promising start to his career in a valuable Newbury bumper last spring and should be hard to beat, but Urubu d'Irlande and Assam Black also achieved enough in bumpers to suggest they should have a bright future over hurdles.

Narrow preference is for BERTIE'S DESIRE, who made a highly encouraging reappearance behind a useful rival over C&D last month. Tom Garner's 5lb claim could be crucial and tips the balance in his favour ahead of Bincombe, who will strip fitter for his pipe-opener over hurdles last time and who represents an in-form Philip Hobbs team. Ballyallia Man is well handicapped having won off 1lb higher last term but his record fresh suggests he'll come on for this. Saint Raph is an interesting contender though his 696-day absence tempers enthusiasm, while the consistent Mackeys Forge should give his all once again but will likely come up short.

Top Tip: Bertie's Desire (5)
Watch out for: Bincombe (1)

Bertie's Desire and Bincombe look sure to give a good account of themselves, but it might be worth taking a chance on the returning Ballyallia Man, who is now below the mark he won off over C&D early in 2013 and hails from the in-form Tom George yard.

Hollow Penny was in a league of his own when bolting up in handicap company here last month and Alan King's inmate looks a novice to keep on the right side of this season. Horizontal Speed was readily put in his place by the 128-rated Golden Hoof at Aintree and will need to run better than that to land a winning blow. SOUTHFIELD THEATRE gets the nod after an impressive performance on his chase bow at Chepstow last month. Paul Nicholls' charge is entitled to have come on for that first run back and he's respected while his second-placed effort in the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham remains fresh in the memory.

Top Tip: Southfield Theatre (2)
Watch out for: Hollow Penny (1)

Hollow Penny arrives on the back of a few wins in handicaps and should give it another good shot, but he probably doesn't have the potential of Southfield Theatre or Horizontal Speed, with the former taken to make it 2 out of 2 over fences.

Polly Peachum holds a number of these rivals on the form of her five-length Listed win at Cheltenham in the spring, but she is making her seasonal debut this afternoon and is not certain to confirm form with the reopposing fifth, BLUE BUTTONS, who was hampered approaching the last at Prestbury Park and would have finished closer with a clearer run. With her stable firing on all cylinders at the moment, a big run is forecast under Noel Fehily. C&D winner Tagrita is respected now dropping in grade, though his fitness, too, has to be taken on trust.

Individual Race Printouts

Standing Ovation won this 12 months ago and was a solid second on his Cheltenham comeback, but he has crept up the weights again. The Young Master struck at the same Showcase meeting at Prestbury Park but this is a tough assignment for one so inexperienced. Court By Surprise was third last year and put it all together at Exeter most recently, while Just A Par, Creevytennant and Pantxoa merit respect, but a chance is taken on OPENING BATSMAN. Harry Fry's eight-year-old lost his way last term but won the 2013 Racing Plus Chase off a mark of 140 and his stable is in red-hot form.

Irving ran very much as his jockey reported he felt - flat - when ninth in the Supreme Novices'. Nonetheless, that was a fair effort in a top-drawer renewal and, previously unbeaten in four starts over timber, he warrants plenty of respect on his seasonal reappearance. The vote, however, goes to ROCK ON RUBY. Although facing no easy task having to concede 6lb and upwards to some high-class opposition, judged on his head defeat at the hands of The New One in the Doom Bar Aintree Hurdle last time, he still looks a couple of notches above these rivals and Harry Fry could barely be in better form at the moment. Bertimont could be the surprise package having won by an eased down 16 lengths on his debut for Dan Skelton at Chepstow, while Fox Norton, Forgotten Voice, Hint Of Mint and Purple Bay all hold outside claims.
