Ballyglasheen was badly hampered before pulling up in the Fred Winter and could produce a much better effort here, but two other Fred Winter runners appeal more, with KELTUS edging the vote over Baradari. The selection was a fine fourth at Cheltenham, one place and two lengths ahead of Venetia Williams' charge, and the manner in which Paul Nicholls' inmate finished his race suggests this uphill climb to the winning post will play to his strengths. Fitzwilly is likely to be staying on at the death judging by recent efforts on the Flat, while the form of Dolores Delightful's Newbury second looks solid and she could go well.

Menorah showed plenty of promise despite only managing fifth at Aintree and the drop in trip, combined with this less competitive level, could signal a big run. Rolling Aces also arrives fresh from a pleasing performance at Liverpool when finishing a valiant runner-up in the Melling Chase. The return of a tongue-tie seemingly elicited that improvement and he remains unexposed if that tack helps him perform to the best of his abilities. Ultimate preference, though, is for HUNT BALL, who failed to see out the Grand National trip but was third in the Ryanair prior to that, and still has plenty more to offer for his new handler.

SIRE DE GRUGY has improved exponentially since signing off last season with victory in this race, earning three Grade 1 successes, including a C&D triumph in the Tingle Creek. Gary Moore's gelding surpassed those achievements, though, when he landed a six-length victory in the Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and he will be the horse of the season for many people regardless of the result here. An inevitably short price will prompt opposition for betting purposes and Special Tiara may be a lively alternative as he could get an easier time in front than he did at Cheltenham. Claret Cloak boasts a progressive profile and looks the best of the rest if he irons out his jumping errors.

The potential for significant rainfall complicates matters greatly, but Spring Heeled, who remains with potential following a 9lb rise for his Kim Muir success, and the well-handicapped Same Difference, who finished second in last year's renewal off 7lb higher, would both hold compelling claims if the ground remained decent. Plenty of the others have some form of question mark next to them, with Hadrian's Approach a sketchy jumper, Roalco De Farges a potentially weak finisher and Burton Port not guaranteed to build on his Newbury promise. The suggestion, therefore, is ARDKILLY WITNESS, who has progressed nicely through the novice ranks this season, showing a sound resolution for this sort of test when second behind Relax here in January. The eight-year-old won't be inconvenienced should the ground deteriorate, and the step up to this marathon trip is likely to see further improvement for a handler who has shown his worth with staying chasers this campaign.

Each of the five runners have hope in what is a fascinating renewal. Medinas is the top-rated performer and this represents a significant drop in class after finishing seventh in the World Hurdle, while Southfield Theatre never seems to run a bad race and must go close if reproducing the form of his nose second in the Pertemps Final. Clondaw Kaempfer showed a great attitude when battling on to win a Grade 3 contest over 2m4f at the Aintree Festival and this extra quarter of a mile isn't a concern, but POLLY PEACHUM shades the verdict. Receiving the mare's allowance, she is best treated at these weights and was mightily impressive when supplementing her Warwick victory at Cheltenham. Seemingly improving all the time and sure to be full of confidence, a massive run is forecast. Clerk's Choice is the likely outsider, but he boasts placed form in Grade 2 company and can't be taken lightly.

FOUNDATION MAN would have probably collected at Wetherby last time were it not for a blunder at the last. He was three lengths ahead of his nearest pursuer until that late mistake and although he's 7lb higher and dropped in trip, he appears to be on an upward curve and is taken to gain compensation. Grade 1 winner L'UNIQUE is the class act in the race and looks capable of conceding weight to this field based on two encouraging performances at Cheltenham of late. Alan King's mare got within a length and a half of the brilliant Quevega in the Grade 2 Mares Hurdle at the festival two starts back and ran a cracker in handicap company there last time. She remains off a workable mark and should appreciate coming back to 2m4f. Kaylif Aramis has enjoyed a profitable season and deserves a lot of credit for his latest Aintree run behind Doctor Harper, for which he's gone up 3lb, while Barry Geraghty prefers Vasco Du Ronceray to stablemate Cash And Go and the Al Namix gelding should be fitter for his reappearance at Aintree earlier this month.
