Provident Spirit shapes as if ready for the step up in trip, but a mark of 87 looks high enough on the balance of form, while the progressive Gothic has to prove his effectiveness on this quicker surface. Lawyer will likely strip fitter for his Yarmouth fourth and is respected, likewise first-time-out scorer Agent Murphy and Polytrack victor Shafrah. Preference, though, is for REEDCUTTER, who defied his basement sales price with a taking course success last month, accounting for a couple of promising rivals, and a subsequent 4lb rise could prove lenient.

Several potential improvers on show in this intriguing handicap. Gothic may well have won had he not encoutered debilitating traffic problems at Goodwood and, with this stiffer track likely to play to his strengths, he could be the answer. Lawyer and Provident Spirit both shape as though they'll benefit from this step up in trip and look dangerous, while Shafrah and Reedcutter also merit respect.

A significant number of these like to go from the front, including the progressive Capo Rosso, The Rectifier and the rejuvenated St Moritz. The first-named won in the manner of a horse to keep on side at Ripon and is respected off 5lb higher, while St Moritz remains well treated on his peak efforts and is in the right hands to continue his upward curve. However, the prospect of a fiercely-run affair could play ideally to the strengths of the lightly-raced SEA SHANTY, who was considered for a tilt at the Hunt Cup following his grinding success at Kempton. Victory here would ensure his place at Royal Ascot, which appears a logical target given his connections. Stablemate Brownsea Brink is a lively each-way player.

There was much to like about Sea Shanty's reappearance victory at Kempton and he's of interest back at the scene of his most recent turf win. However, it's hard to get away from St Moritz who has been revitalised by the fitting of a visor the last twice and, though effectively 12 lb higher compared to when scoring at Ripon 11 days ago, he's still feasibly treated. Apostle has each-way claims.

A high draw isn't ideal for G FORCE, but he looked every inch a Pattern performer when bolting up in a York handicap last month and he can take the step up in class in his stride, with this stiff 5f seemingly ideal. Aertex continues to thrive and should make her presence felt, while the pair of last-time-out scorers Banaadeer and Galvanize are respected. Silent Bullet was pitched into Group 3 company as a juvenile and is interesting on his reappearance in the first-time hood, but ERRONEOUS attracted significant market support when an underwhelming fifth at Chester (with the reopposing Captain Bob in second), seemingly struggling to handle the extended 7f on testing ground. Eased in trip on a livelier surface, he is taken to atone for that reverse.

Watch out for: Aertex (3)

Captain Bob is high on the list following his solid effort at Chester, but the Richard Hannon-trained duo, Aertex and Banaadeer, are expected to come to the fore here. Aertex looks progressive and isn't passed over lightly, but her stablemate showcased a good turn of foot when scoring at Kempton and could prove a tough nut to crack given that a 4 lb rise probably underestimates him.

A host of leading connections represented as befits a maiden usually won by a nice type, with the 84-rated Karraar setting the standard on his string of commendable efforts in highly competitive company this spring. The return to 1m2f looks a positive, but OBSIDIAN, who finished one place behind Karraar on debut at Newbury, caught the eye when a staying-on fifth there and should improve plenty with the experience under his belt. Stablemate Fastnet Red shaped promisingly when fifth behind Second Step last month and is considered, but the main threat might come in the shape of Kings Fete, who finished an eyecatching fourth in that race, making stout progress under hands and heels throughout the closing stages.

Top Tip: Obsidian (14)
Watch out for: Kings Fete (9)

Obsidian and New Story caught the eye when fifth and seventh respectively in the Newbury maiden won by Connecticut 4 weeks ago. There shouldn't be much between them here, but marginal preference is for Obsidian who arguably possesses the greater scope for improvement. There are several other potential improvers on show here, with Kings Fete and Jonny Rae chief among them.
