Alph and Meadow Hawk opened their hurdling accounts last time out and look capable of going close today. However, both receive hefty punishment from the handicapper and would prefer better conditions than today, so the preference is for GREEN ICENI. The former bumper winner has improved with each outing over hurdles and there should be more to come after running a good second in a competitive Cheltenham event last month.

MIKO DE BEAUCHENE showed a nice turn of foot despite the heavy ground to break his duck on his seasonal debut over 2m7f at Lingfield last month. He will relish these conditions and the way he was full of running at the finish suggests he can defy an 8lb rise in the handicap here. October Wetherby winner Nor'nor'east shaped as though further would suit when just held over 2m3f latest and the lightly-raced gelding is an obvious threat, along with mud-loving Jaloux d'Estruval.

Verdict

After winning three from three over timber in his native France, all eyes were on Hoo La Baloo as he switched to chasing for his UK debut at Market Rasen and he didn't disappoint - jumping superbly to win unchallenged. He can battle this out with Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle second RACING DEMON, who opened his chase account at the first time of asking in a competitive Exeter event last month. Henrietta Knight's charge is taken to score again to boost his credentials for the Arkle Chase, but unbeaten chasers Crossbow Creek and Cerium are certainly not out of the equation.

Verdict

Ashley Brook is a bold-jumping front runner who will ensure a searing pace to this classy event. Both he and Kauto Star are weighted to get much closer to their Exeter conqueror Monkerhostin, but preference is for ONEWAY. Mark Rimell's eight-year-old reeled off five successive handicap victories before only finding the powerful triumvirate of Moscow Flyer, Well Chief and Azertyuiop too strong in the Champion Chase. With those three ruled out here, he could gain a first Grade 1 success today.

Tramantano belied odds of 50/1 to fill the runner-up spot in a Grade 3 event at Cheltenham last month after two years off and could go close to defying top weight here. Medison disappointed after landing a listed C&D event with ease in March but a summer break will have done him good, while Adopted Hero and Verasi ran well on their reappearances last time out. ALL STAR lived up to his name when turning a competitive Huntingdon event into a procession on his return to hurdling two weeks ago and, despite a hefty hike in the handicap, could take some stopping if in the same mood today.
