However, Firestarter sets a solid standard with his recent third in a decent 7f maiden at Ascot, form which was boosted by the runner-up's facile win at Yarmouth yesterday, and David Elsworth's charge will ensure the newcomers need to hit the ground running in order to make a winning start.

Following his success in this race 12 months ago, DANGEROUS MIDGE signed off a highly-progressive campaign with victory in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs. He ran too bad to be true on his sole outing since, in the Sheema Classic at Meydan in March, and having won fresh in the past, the five-year-old looks worth another chance as he drops in class today. Green Destiny loves to get his toe in and has shaped as though this trip will be right up his street in landing the John Smith's Cup at York over 1m2f and a Group 3 over 1m1f at the same venue latest. He could be the one to capitalise if the selection fails to fire again because although Sri Putra came out of both the Prince Of Wales's Stakes and Coral-Eclipse with plenty of credit, Roger Varian's charge has something to prove with ease in the ground.

Following a string of fine efforts in defeat, CASPAR NETSCHER gained a deserved first Pattern race success when slamming his rivals in the Gimcrack (B Fifty Two fifth), form which has been severely boosted by Reply, who was sixth at York, landing a hot sales race at Doncaster since (Factory Time second). The cut in the ground may have been the key to Alan McCabe's charge on the Knavesmire and with similar conditions forecast today, he should take all the beating. Saigon narrowly got the better of the selection in a C&D Listed event in July and could be the biggest threat, but looks in need of a step up to 7f now. Swiss Spirit built on a promising opener by landing a York maiden which has thrown up three winners and could go close if handling the slower conditions.

Luca Cumani has won three of the last four runnings of this race and launches a two-pronged assault on this year's renewal, the pick of which appears to be Kirthill, who was unlucky to bump into a well-handicapped rival when runner-up at HQ latest and races off the same mark today. A facile winner in a first-time visor at Haydock, Dhaamer would have strong claims of defying a 9lb hike if the headgear has the same effect while fellow last-time-out Haydock scorer Taqleed is capable of going close under his penalty. However, LABARINTO is taken to continue his rapid progression by completing a double today. He quickened up impressively to come from off the pace and land a valuable 1m2f handicap at Goodwood when last seen in July and, with further progress expected after only seven starts, a 4lb rise could prove fairly lenient with underfoot conditions no concern.

The much-improved DEACON BLUES proved wins in the Wokingham and the Shadwell Stakes to be no fluke when completing the hat-trick with a seven-length demolition job in the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh last month. He clearly relishes some cut and although this shorter trip may not be ideal, his class can see him through for another success before heading to Champions Day at Ascot next month. Night Carnation is another very much on an upward curve, as highlighted by her impressive success in the 5f Coral Charge last time out, but she would prefer a faster surface so the potential fly in the ointment could be Masamah. Following his Group 2 King George Stakes victory at Goodwood, Kevin Ryan's gelding wasn't disgraced at the top level in the Nunthorpe and didn't get home over 6f in that grade latest. Back down in trip and in grade, he can bounce back to form.

Like the first, the second division of this maiden features a host of newcomers from top yards and the betting market should be monitored for clues. Impressive 6f winner Shere Khan pushed a well-backed favourite all the way over 7f at Kempton recently and looks feasibly treated returning to the handicap ranks. However, both of those efforts came on polytrack and, like easy 6f nursery winner Democretes, he is unproven on rain-softened ground. That comment doesn't apply to DRESSED IN LACE, who relished the mud when opening her account in a 6f contest at Chepstow and the booking of the talented 3lb claimer Harry Bentley offsets the majority of his 4lb rise.

The handicapper hasn't been harsh in raising ELLIE IN THE PINK 2lb for her three quarter-length triumph over 7f at Goodwood, which signalled her third win of the campaign, and there could be more to come from the Johannesburg filly. With two wins on good ground, she shouldn't be inconvenienced too much by the forecast conditions and is taken to go in again, possibly at the main expense of fellow hat-trick seeker Mrs Greeley. The latter was much more convincing on her most recent success, over 7f at Chepstow, but that didn't escape the assessor and a 6lb rise leaves her with no margin for error. Loving Thought returned to form with a good third in a similar event at Epsom latest and warrants consideration, along with Uppercut who has been knocking on the door all summer.
