ROCK GONE could be very well treated in this veterans' handicap given his unexposed profile. The eight-year-old represents an astute handler and the distance winner remains and unexposed quantity after just the six starts over hurdles, only three of which have been for Dr Richard Newland. An impressive winner on deep Uttoxeter ground in December '14, he made a more than pleasing return to the track at Plumpton last month and natural improvement makes him a real player. Spice Fair ran creditably in defeat at Taunton in January and is a model of consistency, so he joins Cousin Khee on the shortlist.

A competitive renewal in which the 2014 Grand National winner Pineau De Re and fourth, Alvarado, grace their presence. Both are respected ahead of another tilt at the Aintree marathon next month, but PETE THE FEAT gets the verdict arriving on the back of a couple of creditable performances in defeat. Charlie Longsdon's charge ran fourth in the North Yorkshire Grand National at Catterick in January and finished a close second behind subsequent Grade 3 BetBright Chase fifth Le Reve in a warm Sandown handicap last time. He gets in under a nice weight off 3lb higher and the drop back into a veterans' handicap will help. Of the others, Benbens was deemed good enough to contest the Hennessy Gold Cup here three starts ago and is noted along with Restless Harry and Shotavodka.

ART MAURESQUE represents champion trainer Paul Nicholls, who also saddles Sametegal, and his Ditcheat base has been responsible for seven of the 13 winners since its inaugural running in 2004. Last year Sound Investment got the better of Bennys Mist, a winner at Aintree this season, and Art Mauresque boasts a similar profile to his stable companion. The lightly-raced six-year-old performed well in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham in November, on the back of winning a novice chase contest there by eight lengths, and can be forgiven his latest effort in the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup when rain-softened ground went against him. Dropped 3lb for that effort, he could be very well treated off 144 and the booking of Noel Fehily is a big positive. Course winner Shutthefrontdoor is entitled to strip sharper for this first run in 119 days and connections will no doubt have one eye on the Grand National next month, so Ultragold, an impressive Wincanton scorer last time, is feared most. Little Jon and Pythagore are others to keep onside.

Most of these have some improvement to find if they are going to be successful but not ROYAL GUARDSMAN. The son of King's Theatre won a very competitive hurdle here in November and he looks to exploit a chase mark that is 3lb below that last winning rating over the smaller obstacles. Exmoor Mist is clearly progressing very nicely and he could have added to his winning streak but for parting with his jockey last time. That said, he could struggle to confirm form with Trojan Star, who is 19lb better off for just over four lengths from when the pair met in December. Also, the Kim Bailey runner is tried in first-time cheekpieces today.

A race that is bound to produce many future winners but today's race can go to BAGS GROOVE. The son of Oscar only found the useful Criq Rock too good on debut and he followed that up with an impressive win at Huntingdon on his sole start since. Cultivator was a very respectable third on his debut in this race 12 months and has since broken his maiden tag at Ascot. Boudry won well a week ago but that came in a mediocre event and he has been beaten in two poor contests prior to that. The Alan King-trained pair of Sir Antony Browne and Tara View have to be considered with the yard's success rate in this contest. The former has a big chance based on his impressive victory at Kempton last month. Any market support for Twist On Ginge in debut would be notable.
