Although the bare form of OSCARS DEN's novice hurdle victory doesn't amount to much, the five-year-old was visually very impressive that day and he is taken to defy a penalty with underfoot conditions unlikely to pose a problem. The Clock Leary, a point-to-point winner, was just touched off by the very promising Doctor Harper in a bumper last term, although he was found wanting in testing conditions subsequently. Madness Light was a touch disappointing on his British debut but warrants respect with the tongue-tie fitted now, and Kind Of Easy is also considered reverting to the smaller obstacles.

Watch out for: Madness Light (7)

Oscars Den remains open to further improvement and can overcome his penalty under conditions that should suit him well. Kind of Easy and Strollawaynow are clear best of the rest.

Topaze Collonges hasn't shown much enthusiasm for the game in two starts this term, but Charlie Longsdon's charge was progressive last season and would be interesting if granted an easy lead. That's not guaranteed, however, as Henry King is likely to be ridden prominently and the nine-year-old was unlucky not to score last time after making a terrible blunder at the last. He holds solid claims, as does Wychwoods Brook from a handicapping perspective so long as his heavy fall last time hasn't left any scars. MENTALIST made a lacklustre seasonal bow but will be much more at home in this testing ground and, as only a five-year-old, Venetia Williams's charge should continue to progress this winter.

Henry King is fancied to gain compensation for a slightly unfortunate defeat at Uttoxeter on his reappearance, and in a race lacking strength in depth, he's taken to get the better of Time To Think and Wychwoods Brook.

Smart Money made a really pleasing debut for Venetia Williams over C&D last month, looking the winner turning for home before tiring behind a race-fit rival. The six-year-old warrants maximum respect off a 2lb higher mark, but SWAMPFIRE is worth a chance at the likely prices. Gary Moore's charge ran some fine races in defeat last term, notably when fourth in a hot Cheltenham handicap, and has no trouble ploughing through the mud. His poor reappearance is best forgiven and the stable has been in fine form of late. Even If will be of more interest when stepped up in trip, but don't rule out Arrayan, with the booking of Nick Scholfield catching the eye. Phantom Prince completes the shortlist.

Watch out for: Smart Money (5)

Phantom Prince and especially Even If are capable of upping their game now handicapping, but Smart Money made a very promising start for Venetia Williams when runner-up over C&D last month, and rates a good bet to go one better.

Black Thunder has made a fine start to his career over fences, gaining the scalp of Fox Appeal at Fontwell before beating some nice types at Haydock, including today's rival Shotgun Paddy. There is no reason for that form to be reversed, especially as the last-named shapes as if a much sterner test of stamina will see him to best effect. Gary Moore suggested that The Ladbroke would be next on the agenda for KNIGHT OF PLEASURE following his successful Fontwell return, but connections have opted for this easier contest and that could prove a shrewd move. The four-year-old contested some red-hot races last year and proved he was well-handicapped on his seasonal bow. The extra distance here should bring about more improvement and the ground will pose no issues. Key To The West has performed admirably in novice company and warrants respect, while the consistent duo of Dolatulo and Hi Note are worth a second look. Kuilsriver is likely to need this on his reappearance.

Waltzing Tornado steps up in class in his bid for a four-timer and Neil Mulholland's nine-year-old warrants respect again, despite competing off a 9lb higher mark than his latest victory. Via Sundown was a facile winner here last time and ought to give his running once more but ULTRAGOLD shades the verdict. The five-year-old finished second behind a subsequent winner the last day and his French form would suggest that this softer surface will bring about more improvement. Yellow Ball is respected on her British debut, with Colebrooke not discounted either.
