Fourth in a Listed hurdle at Auteuil on his final start for former connections, KENTUCKY HYDEN struck on his first run for Nicky Henderson at Sandown in November, returning a 33-length winner in a five-runner affair, having been sent off 1-3 favourite. There is likely further improvement to come if granted a solid pace to chase in this slightly bigger field and it will be interesting to see if he's such a warm order again. Paul Nicholls has won this twice in the last three years with Sam Winner (2010) and Far West (2012) so his Vicenzo Mio, a fellow French recruit, is respected on his first start on these shores. John Ferguson's Commissioned, a 97-rated performer on the Flat, is also worth a market check on his hurdles bow.
Kentucky Hyden didn't need to match his French form to score on debut for Nicky Henderson, and looks the one to beat on balance. Vicenzo Mio is a big threat having beaten Art Mauresque last time, but the latter flopped on debut for Paul Nicholls, which tempers enthusiasm to a degree. Commissioned lacks experience, but is a potentially exciting recruit, and merits respect accordingly.

Emma Lavelle won this race 12 months ago with subsequent Hennessy fourth Highland Lodge and looks to have another talented chaser on her hands in LE BEC. Sixth in the Albert Bartlett at last year's Festival, he's hit new heights over fences already this term, following up a commanding chase debut victory at Uttoxeter when following up over the extended 3m here last month. Shutthefrontdoor was less than a length behind him in second that day, with Sam Winner further back in third, and the selection is 3lb worse off with both now he's penalised. Nevertheless, he is a strong jumper, always looked to be holding the runner-up last time, and those battling qualities should stand him in good stead, not only in attempting to confirm his superiority, but also if he lines up in the RSA in the spring. Le Reve has a bit to find with the principals on official figures.
There wasn't much between Le Bec, Shutthefrontdoor and Sam Winner when they filled the first 3 places in that order here last month, and Le Bec is taken to confirm the placings despite being slightly worse off at the weights.

KINGS PALACE fell two out on his hurdles debut at Ayr in January but has seemingly schooled well over the summer, as he's turned in two much improved displays since returning from a break and stepping up in trip, landing a Fontwell maiden in October and then slamming subsequent Grade 2 scorer Creepy by 18 lengths here later that month. He is capable of giving weight to all but Saint Roque to complete a hat-trick. The last-named is considered the main danger, as he was outpaced when third in a 2m4f Grade 2 at Sandown and is unexposed beyond 3m. Milan Bound was impressive when winning under a penalty over 3m at Uttoxeter and also figures highly on the shortlist.
Kings Palace was most impressive when scoring here in October, and will be hard to beat with a repeat, particularly if the ground eases, which would be a negative for Saint Roque. Milan Bound has a bit to find on form, but is unbeaten in this sphere, and looks open to plenty of improvement.

Johns Spirit bids to become only the fourth horse to complete the Paddy Power/December Gold Cup double, a feat his handler Jonjo O'Neill achieved with Exotic Dancer. The six-year-old is 9lb higher than his latest success, but he hit the front early enough that day and idled all the way to the line. The runner-up Colour Squadron meets his rival on 2lb better terms but is no certainty to reverse the form as questions about his jumping and attitude remain. Easter Meteor looked a major player on that occasion before crashing out at the second-last but this race might be one too many for now, while fourth home Attaglance has the ground in his favour and holds every chance off a 6lb higher mark. DOUBLE ROSS beat Attaglance in a Perth novice chase in September off level weights and has been plying his trade over inadequate stamina tests since. A winner around here over timber, Nigel Twiston-Davies appears to have brought his charge nicely to the boil and he can score off an attractive mark. Salut Flo, a decisive winner when last seen at the 2012 Festival, would hold every chance if returning in a similar vein. Grandioso hasn't finished improving either and also warrants consideration in a typically open renewal.

Official figures suggest THE NEW ONE and Zarkandar are the pair to focus on. They may actually be more closely matched than the betting indicates, given both are on marks of 167 and considering Zarkandar, who lowered the colours of the selection with a half-length victory in the Aintree Hurdle, is now re-fitted with blinkers (which were left off when beaten by Annie Power last time). However, Nigel Twiston-Davies representative, last year's Neptune winner, turned in a visually impressive performance to slam 2012 Champion Hurdle hero Rock On Ruby by 10 lengths at Kempton on his return and is capable of reversing Liverpool placings with the Paul Nicholls inmate over this shorter trip. Grade 2 winner Court Minstrel appears best of the rest, though he's realistically vying for third if the principals run to form.
The New One and Zarkandar are closely matched on the figures, but a tactical battle at this trip is very much in the former's favour, and he's a confident selection to bolster his place in the Champion Hurdle market. Court Minstrel is better than he could show here last month, and is easily the pick of the others.

GEMIX sets the standard based on his French Champion Hurdle victory and although this is unlikely to be plain sailing now he's dropped back in trip, on better ground and under a penalty, he rates the most likely winner and gets the verdict. Salubrious advertised his well-being when touched off by just a short-head in a Listed handicap at the Open meeting and appears the main danger on these terms, as he's considerably better off with Glens Melody and More Of That than if this were a handicap.
A veritable humdinger despite the small field. Gemix has the best form in the book, and while his career highlight came when beating Solwhit over 25f, he has plenty of tactical speed, and this trip looks fine. More of That has come a long way in a short time, and may prove the biggest threat, although Salubrious travelled well when second here last month, and is no slouch, either.
