POLITOLOGUE has looked an absolute natural over the larger obstacles on his two outings to date, including when routing the opposition on his chase debut here at Haydock over 2m5f before landing a Grade 2 prize at Ascot last month, and this race looks to suit his programme book with soft ground over this distance an ideal combination. Waiting Patiently has done little wrong in his chasing career so far but this looks by far his toughest task to date so the main dangers could well be Bun Doran, an impressive winner at Newcastle in handicap company last time, and Maximiser, who should improve a ton for his return at Newbury behind Unowhatimeanharry.

ELGIN looks to be a gelding going places judged on his impressive victories at Newcastle and, even more so, Kempton last time. Forecast soft ground won't be an issue, he has already proven himself at the Merseyside track and rates a good bet to maintain his unbeaten record over hurdles. Mohaayed is 2lb better off with the favourite than when chasing him home at Kempton and looks the obvious danger again with plenty of improvement to come, while Neon Wolf has answered every question asked of him thus far and should put up a good show. Craggaknock and Crievehill add further spice to the race but are unlikely to prove good enough.

Compared to the last two renewals where THE NEW ONE has looked to face a simple task, this year looks to be more competitive on paper with the threats of L'Ami Serge and Irving looming large. Despite having to give 8lb to the former, the son of King's Theatre has been in excellent form this season having looked as good as ever when winning in this grade at Cheltenham in the International before finding Yanworth too strong in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton. The ground should be more in his favour as it will be less testing than is normally the case and both his main rivals have questions to answer. L'Ami Serge travelled all over his rivals at Cheltenham on New Year's Day but, when push came to shove, found little for pressure when run down by Agrapart and that would have to be a concern once again despite the drop in distance being a positive. Irving bounced back to form with a Grade 1 success in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle and would be preferred as the main danger if he hasn't gone off the boil. Cyrus Darius is an interesting contender on his return from an absence but is entitled to improve for the outing.

Colin Tizzard has dominated the staying chase scene in England this season and already has three credible Gold Cup contenders in Thistlecrack, Cue Card and Native River, but bids for a fourth bite of the cherry with top-class French chaser ALARY, who boasts top class form in France having placed twice at the highest level and, despite having a win record of 2-20, could well prove to be a cut above the opposition. Bristol De Mai should take the field along but has shown his limitations when challenged for the lead so perhaps the main dangers are Definitly Red, an impressive winner of the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby on Boxing Day, and Vintage Clouds, who makes his handicap debut over the larger obstacles. Others who merit consideration include Otago Trail, who beat Bristol De Mai in the Rehearsal Chase two starts ago, Virak, who was disappointing in the same contest but is dropping down the weights, and the progressive O'Maonlai, who deserves another crack at 3m after a solid victory on Hennessy day at Newbury.

Desert Cry and Splash of Ginge are both admirable veterans but they would appear to be vulnerable after hikes in the ratings following recent victories.
