AMERICAN ARTIST wasn't without his supporters when sent to Haydock for his racecourse bow earlier this month and although Roger Varian's charge failed to justify favouritism, he ran on nicely for fourth and should be more the wiser with that experience under his belt. He's well fancied given the form of Varian's stable is strong, but keep a close eye on Frognal Bear, who has shaped with plenty of promise in two starts so far, and Epsom fourth Inke.

Top Tip: American Artist (1)
Watch out for: Frognal Bear (5)

American Artist was unable to justify short-priced favouritism on debut at Haydock, but he still made an encouraging start to his career and appeals as the most likely winner. The dangers are headed by Quick Defence, who's bound to improve from his first run, and Frognal Bear, who's worth another chance to confirm debut promise.

The market is expected to deliver further clues as to the chances of smartly bred newcomers Atalan and Ya Hade Ye Delil, but preference is for experience and DISSOLUTION gets the nod. Sir Michael Stoute's New Approach colt got within three lengths of Chesham Stakes fourth and subsequent Listed scorer Nafaqa on his Newbury debut in July and although he failed to justify favouritism at Haydock last time, he's improving for each visit to the track and the step up in distance should suit. Shadow Rock and Constable Buckley make up the shortlist.

Top Tip: Dissolution (3)
Watch out for: Constable Buckley (2)

Quite a test of stamina for these 2-y-os. Dissolution wasn't stopping when runner-up over a mile at Haydock last time and looks the type to respond positively to headgear, but narrow preference is for Constable Buckley, who looked a useful prospect when splitting a pair of subsequent winners on debut at Newbury last month.

Spacelab impressed when winning at odds of 25-1 on her Lingfield debut last month, but she may struggle in conceding weight to the more experienced three-year-olds and STARLIT CANTATA is preferred. The daughter of Oratorio has had a few chances off 1lb lower, but it could be significant that Ryan Moore takes over in the plate for this assignment and the step up to 1m3f may just bring about the required improvement. King Calypso boasts sound claims chasing the hat-trick and he merits shortlist inclusion as well.

GRANDEUR won this corresponding race 12 months ago and is the class horse in the race in his bid to defend his crown. The son of Verglas is a real globetrotter, second in a Grade 2 handicap at Belmont last time out, and has won nine of his 23 career starts. Jeremy Noseda's representative is expected to have too much class for these rivals, but Be My Gal is capable of bettering her latest Deauville flop now eased in grade, while Marsh Daisy was deemed good enough to contest the Oaks at Epsom earlier this season and the C&D winner can also get competitive.

Blue Surf is no stranger to success at this track and he almost exploited a 1lb lower mark over 2m here at the beginning of the month. He is very much one for consideration and the same can be said of Kempton second Jacob Cats. RAINBOW ROCK is taken to bounce back, though, as Mark Johnston's charge can be forgiven his effort in a heritage handicap at Ascot last time given he got within half a length of stable companion Lyn Valley in a hot handicap at the Glorious meeting here in July.

He's expected to be thereabouts, as is the hat-trick-seeking Ganymede, but the vote goes to PARISIAN PYRAMID. Lee Carter's inmate was beaten narrowly at Epsom off 3lb lower when last sighted and looks ready to regain the winning thread based on an equally impressive effort on the south coast last month.
