Point-to-point winner WEAKFIELD was slightly disappointing when sent off favourite for a Carlisle bumper on his NH debut earlier in the month, but the demands of this race should be much more to his liking (obstacles and a longer trip) and an improved effort is forecast. Hitman Fred ran third behind a subsequent winner at Hexham last time and he is likely to give another good account, while Drumlee Watar and Minella Bobo also merit consideration.

MINELLA BOBO was a big eye-catcher in a Newbury bumper on his first start for Rebecca Curtis earlier this month and it looks telling that he's quickly switched to hurdles. With this sort of trip sure to suit he can make a winning start. Drumlee Watar showed plenty at Chepstow and looks a definite improver, while cases can also be made for Hitman Fred and Weakfield.

CHARMANT was foot perfect when trouncing the opposition on his seasonal/chasing debut at Sedgefield earlier this month and, entitled to improve for that first outing since March, he is fancied to defy an 8lb rise. Peppay Le Pugh is a very likeable/consistent performer and looks sure to run his usual honest race, while Mercian King was only a head behind the latter at Worcester before disappointing last time, so he is hard to dismiss.

However, from further down the weights, it might pay to side with DUBH DES CHAMPS representing the in-form Philip Kirby team. The six-year-old improved for stepping up to the extended 2m7f trip when fourth at Hexham last time and, granted another furlong or so today, he could progress again.

Bouvreuil was sent off 10-1 for the Grand Annual at Cheltenham just eight months ago and needs a market check on stable debut for Ben Haslam having left the Paul Nicholls yard, while course winner Slanelough looked to need the run at Carlisle on his return and should enjoy this additional yardage.
