PERSIAN DELIGHT hadn't run since April 2015 when returning at this venue two months ago and the six-year-old made a promising reappearance, only finishing second to the talented Colin Tizzard inmate Elegant Escape, who has since followed up. He shaped as though he would be landing such an event next time out and this represents an excellent opportunity. Joueur Bresilien ran well on UK debut for Rebecca Curtis recently despite being weak in the betting and should be involved, while Full Irish is probably better than what he showed at Hereford when a beaten favourite four weeks ago.

SYKES was strong in the betting when successful here earlier this month and a 3lb rise for that triumph doesn't look to be overly harsh. Philip Hobbs' charge has the potential to develop into a useful handicapper and he is likely to launch a bold bid to land a third course win. Peter Bowen and Awaywiththegreys landed this prize in 2013, 2014 and 2016 and the nine-year-old is likely to have been targeted at this race once more. His form hasn't quite been the same, though, and it might be worth giving him a wide berth on this occasion. The yard will be keen to extend their record in this contest, though, and perhaps stablemate COURT KING can take advantage of his low rating. Already touted as a potential Triumph Hurdle candidate in March, DEFI DU SEUIL has made a flawless start to his hurdling career in the UK for JP McManus and the three-year-old could be tough to beat now tackling this better contest. He is a versatile type who handles varying ground and should be able to account for Dino Velvet, who was going well behind the selection before a fall at Cheltenham in November. He followed up at short odds earlier this month to show his potential and Alan King's gelding can beat the unbeaten Evening Hush to second place. The latter has done everything right so far and receives a 3lb allowance but heads into uncharted territory now and could be found out.

NATIVE RIVER, who is undoubtedly the class act in this line-up, arrives in top form and can defy the burden of top weight. A real likeable sort, he is tough and jumps and stays well - all the attributes needed to win a race of this nature. He was not to be denied in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury last time and this extra yardage can only help his cause.
