Aidan O'Brien unleashed subsequent Triumph Hurdle winner Ivanovich Gorbatov in this race 12 months ago and it's interesting that son, Joseph, does the same with English St Leger third and fifth Housesofparliament and Sword Fighter today. Both warrant plenty of respect on their debuts under Rules but slight preference is for MERI DEVIE, a Willie Mullins French recruit who was beaten just over four lengths in Group 1 company at Deauville last time. Mullins just edged out O'Brien in the big juvenile hurdle race here yesterday and that could be the case again. Icario looks best of those with experience.

High-class bumper performer BACARDYS still looked to be in second gear when falling three from home on his hurdling debut at Cork and, providing that nasty experience hasn't knocked his confidence, he will prove extremely difficult to beat. PEACE NEWS would more than likely have finished second behind unbeaten mare Airlie Beach in the Royal Bond at Fairyhouse had he not come a cropper two out and, providing that costly mistake hasn't left any lasting damage, he looks sure to mount a bold bid. Saturnas went on to finish runner-up in that Grade 1 contest and he can run another big race, similarly the third, Le Martalin, who was up in the van throughout. The other five runners all have bit and pieces of form to give them a chance in a cracking renewal.

It is interesting that chasing plans are temporarily abandoned for Supasundae and he is likely to launch a bold bid here despite having to give weight away to the field. Swamp Fox paid the price for attempting to make all at Naas last month and ended up in third after tiring in the final stages, while De Name Escapes Me has to be respected as the choice of Barry Geraghty from the JP McManus runners. Desmond McDonagh isn't one of the more well known Irish National Hunt handlers but he boasts a record of 2-7 with his runners at this venue and MORGA fits the profile for this type of test. A typically tough puzzle to solve with winners at 20/1, 33/1 (twice) and 14/1 in the last 10 years and a number of these could still be ahead of their rating. The Crafty Butcher has been the subject of support in recent weeks for team Mullins and has to be respected off a mark of 127 with Ruby Walsh in the saddle, while JP McManus is typically well represented with six entrants, including recent Navan winner Oscar Knight and admirable veteran Gallant Oscar. Noble Endeavour was going well in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham earlier this year before a crashing fall and he will have his supporters once more, but Gordon Elliott may have better claims with UCELLO CONTI. The selection ran a blinder in the Becher Chase at Aintree earlier this month when fourth and looks capable of landing a decent prize such as this before the end of the season.

BALLYWARD was purchased by Graham Wylie and given the success that the leading owner has had with such types from the Irish point-to-point scene in the past, it is no surprise to see this four-year-old already featuring in the betting for the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham in March. The Mullins string have been going well in bumpers over the last few weeks and connections will be disappointed if this son of Flemensfirth cannot make a winning debut. Noel Meade has landed this prize twice in the last four years and Minella Fair has been unfortunate enough to bump into some nice types in his career so far. Scarteen is an interesting Dermot Weld candidate who should make his presence felt.
