BALLYBOLLEY stepped up on his hurdling debut at Perth when running a much better at race at Cheltenham next time and the Grade 2 bumper winner can get his head in front with continued improvement here. Beast Of Burden looks the biggest danger to the selection as he hacked up on his debut in a NH Flat race at Ffos Las and his handler has spoken about him in glowing terms. The penalised Area Fifty One bumped into a smart rival at Ludlow (subsequently fifth in the Paddy Power Gold Cup) and is respected, while Great Try and Howwrongcanyoube deserve closer market inspection.

NYANZA is a strong fancy to regain the winning thread. The heavy ground probably cost her when losing out to Announcement by a length at Leicester (raced wide throughout) and with faster conditions forecast on Merseyside, and meeting on 7lb better terms, she should have few problems reversing placings. That said, the top horse is certainly heading the right way and should reach the frame, while Irish raider Hannah's Magic and Nick Williams' French recruit Brise Vendeenne add further spice to the race.

BAILEYS CONCERTO has been a success story of the season in rattling up a five-timer, all triumphs arriving on good ground over a trip around 2m4f. His recent defeat of Robbie at Musselburgh has been franked by the subsequent success of the runner-up at Doncaster and he's taken to make it six on the bounce while conditions remain in his favour. Distime, runner-up to the selection here before scoring with plenty in hand at Sedgefield, looks the likeliest threat, although Bincombe looks tantalisingly weighted if recapturing his best after three disappointing runs, especially with his yard remaining in glowing form.

A fiendishly competitive renewal in which strong cases can be made for many. BALBRIGGAN has been in superb form this season, landing a gamble in the Troytown at Navan last time out. The form of his third at Cheltenham in October is rock solid, and he should make a bold bid despite being hit with a 10lb rise. A courageous winner of this race last year, Chance Du Roy races off just 6lb higher this time around and he is sure to give his all once again in defence of his crown. Mendip Express blew away the cobwebs with a facile success over timber at Warwick last month and he could prove leniently handicapped off 144. Knock A Hand and The Package are both weighted to strike but appeal more as each-way contenders. Through stayer Goonyella enters calculations, while Kruzhlinin is the pick of Jason Maguire and he could outrun his price.

Aintree has been good to HOLYWELL in the past, placed behind Solwhit in 2013 and winning the Mildmay Novices' Chase by 10 lengths last season, and he rates a rock-solid favourite. It was no surprise to see him struggle over an inadequate 2m4f trip on his seasonal reappearance at Carlisle (weak in the betting market before that race as well) and stepping back up in trip, and with that run now under his belt, he will prove extremely difficult to beat. His biggest danger looks to be the mare Ma Filleule, who is off the same terms as when chasing home Holywell at last season's Cheltenham Festival and she showed a liking for this track when dotting up in the Topham a month later. She is probably best forgiven a lacklustre display on her reappearance at Down Royal, while Medermit could have Sam Winner's measure on his first start out of Graded company in four years.

Paul Nicholls won this contest 12 months ago with Rebel Rebellion, who returns to defend his crown off a 5lb higher rating and should again go well. Nicholls' hand is strengthened further by ROLLING ACES, who ran creditably in the Old Roan Chase on his seasonal return and has taken well to the Mildmay course, also finishing a fair third behind Boston Bob in last season's Melling Chase. If that form can be transferred over the National fences today, he rates the one they all have to beat. Bennys Mist jumped these fences well when second in the Topham last term but may be best on bottomless ground. The pick of the remainder may be recent Sandown runner-up Dolatulo.
