Expert Analysis
This was an extremely poor renewal of this grade two novices’ chase. The second and third were not beaten far whilst both competing with a 127 rating to their names. The second favourite ran no race leaving the even money favourite to scramble home just in front of two horses rated 20lbs below him.
BLUEKING D’OROUX His trainer stated post-race that he may well have gone back over hurdles if not successful here. He does not present as a natural chaser and his trainers quote would add to my wariness of his chances if competing over big fences in the future. He had to really knuckle down to just get the better of a horse he is rated 20lbs higher than. I will remain open minded as to the chances of seeing Blueking D'Oroux back over hurdles at some point this season.
BREAKING COVER He has earned his 127 rating through his exploits as a summer jumper. Although this will inevitably go down as a career best performance, at the same time, the highly rated winner of this race is yet to convince over the larger obstacles.
RIGHTSOTOM The Joe Tizzard horses seem to be running into form and this performance was a significant step forward from his chasing and seasonal debut run at Cheltenham last month. After being outpaced from the third last fence he rallied close to the finish in the style of a horse that will appreciate a stiffer test of stamina.
COBRA QUEEN After being heavily supported down to 7/4 second favourite in the market she was very disappointing in the race as she dropped right out of contention early in the home straight. With this first attempt this side of the Irish Sea under her belt, maybe we will see more from her in a British handicap later in the season.
