Expert Analysis
A race that was slightly lacking in depth, despite the decent-sized field, but the cream rose to the top and Charyn’s win against a classy rival can be regarded as one of the best in the whole European season.
The early pace was strong, a bit too much so for some, and it resulted in a fairly slow finish, the winner’s 27.49s equal to a 96.4% finishing speed). The signs are that the ground was at its most testing – soft tending towards heavy – for this full mile of the straight course.
CHARYN (125 here, 124 previously) seemed an improbable star of the 2024 season at its outset, and even after he won a Listed race at Doncaster in March, but that is what he has become, high-class and versatile/consistent with it.
This was probably about his best effort of all, too, tracking the pace and niggled mid-race before leading on the bridle approaching 2f out, shaken up then ridden as he was challenged 1f out, edging left but responding well and comfortably on top again by the line. Any ground between “good to firm” and “heavy” seems to come alike to him.
FACTEUR CHEVAL (120 here and previously) was right back to the level of his Group 1 win at Meydan in March, held up going well, stalking the winner after halfway and quickening alongside him approaching the final 1f, bumped soon after and no extra late on but running a fine race in defeat all told.
TAMFANA (106 here, 116 previously) was a bit below form in a race in which she could have been expected to finish alongside the runner-up at her very best, close up and with every chance until one paced in the final 1f. She has form at 10f/12f but her best efforts are all at this trip now.
DANCING GEMINI (102 here, 108 previously) ran respectably and with some encouragement for if he gets a clearer run at things next year, held up and staying on without getting in a blow.
QUDDWAH (99+ here, 114 previously) ran better than the result, looking a threat as he improved from the rear over 2f out but briefly short of room then finding little. He could be worth a try at 7f again next year.
CHECKANDCHALLENGE (88 here, 109 previously) had been fourth in this in the previous 2 years but basically finds this company a bit beyond him and weakened after not being too far back 2f out.
HENRY LONGFELLOW (88 here, 119 previously) has failed to win in 2024 and got worse rather than better since his second at Royal Ascot, doing plenty up front here and quickly beaten 2f out.
METROPOLITAN (87 here, 115 previously) was sweating and well below form after a slow start.
ICE MAX (0 here, 111 previously) went too freely close up for a long way.
LORD MASSUSUS (0 here, 109 previously)
PRAGUE (0 here, 117 previously) stopped so quickly after leading/disputing the lead racing wide that all might not have been right.
POKER FACE (0 here, 110 previously)
