On his day, Lordofthehouse was a smart handicapper on the Flat, but he has refused to race on his last two runs in that sphere so caution is advised now he debuts over timber. With Dawn Twister also arriving with a little to prove, after unseating his rider three out at Stratford latest, the safest option appears to be FALCARRAGH, who has turned in two creditable maiden displays this term and sets the standard with an official rating of 122.

FILL THE POWER became frustrating to follow over hurdles last term but it is hoped he has turned over a new leaf in this sphere view of his chase debut success at Sedgefield in May. Our Island looks the main danger on the back of his reappearance success at Kelso as he also brings plenty of chase experience to the table. Brady is another expected to improve now switched to fences for the first time and also merits shortlist inclusion.

Last year's winner Alasi warrants plenty of respect in view of her ability to go well fresh and proven effectiveness under conditions. She's forced into carrying a penalty this time around, however, a negative which also counts against Nicky Henderson's Fred Winter winner Une Artiste. With that in mind, perhaps it might be worth chancing BABY SHINE, whose Aintree third to Simonsig last season entitles her to respect on today's terms.

SMAD PLACE ran a blinder for third in the World Hurdle before getting rid of Robert Thornton at Aintree. He is an exciting chasing prospect but victory here could postpone fences for another year, with further clashes with Big Buck's in store. Tidal Bay is better over the larger obstacles and hacked up in the bet365 Gold Cup, but a bigger threat is Cape Tribulation, who won at Cheltenham and Liverpool and has the benefit of a spin on the Flat under his belt. Restless Harry and Fair Along have won the last three renewals of this between them but will struggle against less exposed stayers today.

Top Tip: Smad Place (3)
Watch out for: Cape Tribulation (2)

Restless Harry aims to follow up his impressive win in this last year, but an 8-lb penalty in a stronger renewal looks likely to scupper him, and Smad Place is readily preferred. Alan King's grey has most to fear from Cape Tribulation, who warmed up for this with an excellent Flat effort last month.

Silviniaco Conti is perhaps the most interesting of these with a few to potential Gold Cup clues but, with Midnight Chase and Time For Rupert both preferring to force the issue, the race could be set up for a more assured stayer in the shape of PLANET OF SOUND. Philip Hobbs' 10-year-old showed up for a long way in the National and was a running-on second in the Hennessy on his reappearance last year. Master Of The Hall isn't up to a Grade 2 of this standard and has to give weight away, while Wayward Prince is now in training with his owner after losing the plot in the early part of 2012.
