EXCELSIOR ACADEMY has plenty going for him as long as he doesn't 'bounce' after a pleasing hurdling debut following a long absence from the track. A winner on the Flat, he handled the heavy well enough behind Balder Success at Plumpton and can post a first hurdling victory. Hidden belied his starting price with a much-improved effort at Bangor last time and should be in the shake-up, with Pittodrie Star and Mistoffelees also warranting shortlist inclusion.
Hidden ran well under similar conditions at Bangor last month and is perhaps the most solid option. Pittodrie Star has form in the mud on the Flat and is likely to leave the form of his recent hurdling debut behind, with Excelsior Academy another likely improver.

UNWANTED GIFT improved significantly on his second run since joining Rachel Hobbs from Ireland when a five-length runner-up to the in-form Star Galaxy at Huntingdon this month. This low-grade affair will be a real slog and the gelding's ability to stay the trip can prove decisive. On The Right Path, unproven on heavy, has bits of pieces of form that afford him claims, likewise the bottom weighted Blue Ronnie. Railway Rico is an interesting hurdling debutant for a small yard in good form.
Unwanted Gift looks sure to be popular after finishing second over fences last time, but with slight doubts about his stamina, he is taken on with Lilac Belle who can belatedly confirm the promise of her reappearance. On The Right Path is another to consider.

Araucaria is a talented mare as shown by some high-class Irish bumper and hurdling form but has given the distinct impression that chasing is not her favourite game and will need to jump much better to reverse December's Exeter placings with MOLLY ROUND. The latter was impressive that day and can confirm the form on ground she clearly handles well. Dun See Dee looks a threat to both if taking to chasing as her hurdles form is pleasingly reliable and consistent.
Araucaria was just about the pick of these over hurdles and has sound prospects of getting off the mark over fences if replicating either of her recent placed efforts in this sphere. Point-winner Dun See Dee looks likely to prove the most troublesome.

FENTARA has a heavy-ground win to her name at Hexham last December and her assured stamina and ability to act on the prevailing ground should see her on the premises. She disappointed behind stable companion, Zefooha, last time but may have been subject to the 'bounce' factor. She's worth another chance with the reliable Teshali nominated as the likeliest danger along with River Dragon for the Coyle yard that is making a good impression this term. Chamirey and Blazing Buck are also respected.
Blazing Buck and River Dragon are both proven under these conditions and make the most appeal, with the former just getting the vote, though market confidence for the well-treated Naiad du Misselot on his return from a lengthy absence would look significant.

None of these arrive in form but DESPERATE DEX does have some plus factors, namely a course success, the ability to handle the ground, a decent third here on his penultimate outing and Lucy Alexander's 5lb claim. However, he is hardly the most reliable either, having pulled up in 10 of his last 22 runs. He's a tentative selection to say the least. Ruby Bay is a possible improver and Master D'Or won at Fontwell on Friday but this comes soon enough.
Ruby Bay is a confident selection as he's open to plenty of improvement now tackling handicaps over fences. Salut Honore rates a danger despite a disappointing chase debut, while Master d'Or promoted himself to the shortlist after a win from out of the blue at Fontwell on Friday.

In contrast, PENSNETT BAY goes on ground with cut and finished runner-up in a bumper on his racecourse debut. Well beaten last time, his overall form profile affords him decent claims. She's On The Case is respected at her best but has disappointed the last twice whilst Royaume Bleu is respected off the bottom perch although her yard is searching for form this term.
Form picks Royaume Bleu and Pensnett Bay don't inspire massive confidence, and a chance is taken on chasing-debutant Richard The Third, a course winner over timber. Emperor Charlie has place claims if building on a more encouraging effort last time.

Jackson Cage's 2 wins have come when the mud has been flying and these conditions should be right up his street. Swinging Hawk likely has more to offer over hurdles at some point, while Layla's Dancer will find this easier than the Grade 2 he contested last time.
