FIRST EDITION failed to fire on his final start in 2020, where soft ground would have been against him, but it is far too soon to be writing him off. Clive Cox's colt had been an impressive maiden winner over C&D in September and was then not disgraced when fourth in the Group 2 Mill Reef at Newbury. It would be no surprise to see him play a leading role back on a decent surface this afternoon. Nomadic Empire made the frame in Listed company twice as a juvenile and he is an obvious threat to the selection. Charlie Fellowes and Nelson Gay are both fit from the all-weather but they will need to improve if the selection is ready to go on his return to action.
NELSON GAY arrives in search of a hat-trick and his rivals don't look all that well-treated, so he's fancied to continue on an upward curve and open his account on turf. Fantasy Master could pose a threat if he gets going soon enough, while First Edition may do better still this season.

This appears to be a very competitive renewal of this contest but the marginal preference is for ILZA'EEM, who created a big impression when getting off the mark easily on his seasonal return at Redcar earlier in the month. The Crisford's colt had chased home a pair of exciting prospects in his two juvenile starts at Kempton last November and it would be no surprise if an opening mark of 89 underestimated his ability. Rifleman improved with every start as a two-year-old and the son of The Gurkha should have more to offer this year. Dingle confirmed his well-being with a placed effort in a similar contest at Newbury a week ago and he should be thereabouts once again. Others to consider are Quintillus and Naamoos.
A cracking renewal of this good 3-y-o handicap, featuring several progressive types. RIFLEMAN gets the nod after making a very promising start to his career last autumn. Dingle shaped very well in a hot Newbury handicap last week and looks sure to have a say if coping with 2 outings in such quick succession. Ilza'eem looked good at Redcar and is also much rsspected.

Waldkonig won well on his return to action at Pontefract a couple of weeks ago but that was only handicap company and this is much more demanding. With that in mind, preference is for HIGHEST GROUND, whose disappointing run on soft ground at Newmarket when last seen in October can be easily forgiven. The son of Frankel had been progressive prior to that defeat and he can add to his trainer's outstanding record in this contest. Thunderous beat the selection in the Dante last year and he cannot be discounted this afternoon, although his only defeat came on his seasonal debut last year.
A belting renewal of this Group 3, featuring a few who are likely to make their presence felt at the highest level in 2021. HIGHEST GROUND gets the nod to turn around last year's Dante form with Thunderous and provide Sir Michael Stoute with a fourth successive winner of the race. Hukum was a rapid improver last year and could be the one to give him most to do.

PALACE PIER lost his unbeaten record when finishing third in the QEII at Ascot in October on very soft ground, but he is best judged on his two previous Group 1 victories. The son of Kingman followed up his success in the St James's Palace with a win in a decent renewal of the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville in August and a reproduction of either of those efforts today would make him very hard to beat. That said, Khuzaam appeared to take a big step forwards when winning the All-Weather Mile Championship at Lingfield earlier in the month, although his lack of turf form is a concern. If Happy Power were to get an easy lead he could outrun his price, whilst Bless Him looks to be up against it.
PALACE PIER quickly progressed into a top-class miler last season, winning Group 1s at Royal Ascot and in France, and is taken to outclass his 3 rivals on return. Khuzaam still has to prove he's as effective on turf but is progressive and race-fit, so is taken to follow the selection home.

A case can be made for all of these but none more so than ETONIAN, who won twice over 7f at this track as a two-year-old. On the first of those occasions, Richard Hannon's colt accounted for the high-class One Ruler in a maiden, while he scored in the Group 3 Solario Stakes on his next start. He didn't appear to relish the soft ground when well beaten in the Dewhurst on his final start in 2020, but could return to winning ways with conditions set to suit today. Yibir progressed well throughout his juvenile campaign and he looked to be a nice prospect when winning what is traditionally a decent conditions race at Newbury in September. Sir Lucan is another who caught the eye last year and, whilst he may not be the very best three-year-old in Ballydoyle, he should be capable of making his mark at this level. Lone Eagle and Recovery Run are closely matched based on their meeting in the Zetland and they complete the shortlist.
A fascinating renewal of the Classic Trial. TRAWLERMAN clocked a good time when running away with a Ponterfract maiden earlier in the month and this fast improving son of Golden Horn can take this step up in class in his stride for the Gosden team. Yibir looks the pick of the Charlie Appleby-trained duo and is feared most, although Zetland Stakes 1-2 Lone Eagle and Recovery Run are much respected.

Nash Nasha sets the standard after getting off the mark at Lingfield last August, however, that form does not appear to be very strong and the 7lb penalty has to be a slight concern. With that in mind, preference is for CHIASMA, who is a full-sister to the unbeaten 10-time Group 1 winner Frankel as well as Noble Mission. The Gosden's have given this well-bred filly plenty of time and it would be no surprise if she proved to be well above average. Royal Harmony is the first foal out of a mare who won a Listed race over 1m2f and was placed in the Oaks. Loving Dash is closely related to the Queen's Vase winner Dashing Willoughby, while Breccia shares here page with plenty of high-class performers.
CHIASMA has an awful lot to live up to being a sister to the outstanding Frankel no less but she is under the expert tutelage of the Gosden team and taken to get off to a winning start. Charlie Appleby has his string in fine nick so his Lingfield scorer Nash Nasha, a daughter of Irish 1000 Guineas winner Just The Judge, seems sure to have a say, with Royal Harmony another eye-catching debutante.

SEA THE SHELLS confirmed the promise that he displayed when winning easily on his debut at Wolverhampton in February by defying a penalty at the same venue last month. That last piece of form was boosted when the second hit the crossbar in a handicap at Newmarket last week off a mark of 85. Given that Mark Johnston's colt readily beat that rival whilst giving him 7lb suggests that an opening mark of 93 appears to be very fair. Juan De Montalban progressed well through his juvenile campaign and he was last seen getting off the mark over 1m1f at Goodwood in October. Valorant merits consideration on her seasonal return, while Fabilis edges out Arthur's Realm to be best of the rest.
SEA THE SHELLS was impressive in a couple of Wolverhampton novices earlier in the year and can progress again and stretch his unbeaten record to 3 now handicapping. Goodwood novice winner Juan de Montalban appeals as the type to improve again at 3 and can give Mark Johnston's colt most to think about.
