USE YOUR FILBERT looked slightly uncomfortable on the undulations of the July Course when a narrow second but he is clearly a colt with plenty of potential. The switch to a more conventional track can see him back in the winner's enclosure at the chief expense of Miracle Ninetynine, who has run to a solid level in defeat and could find extra improvement in the first-time blinkers. Properus is better than he showed last time but quick ground would be a concern, while Easy Tiger is progressing nicely and has to enter calculations from the foot of the weights.

USE YOUR FILBERT took a big step forward when narrowly denied by another improver upped to this trip at Newmarket in June. He remains unexposed and looks sure to make a another bold bid. Crack Shot will be more at home back over this trip and is also respected, alongside Easy Tiger and Miracle Ninetynine.

Following the withdrawal of Mecca's Angel, the vote goes to WAADY who took his course-and-distance record to 3-3 when scoring readily in Listed company here three weeks ago. John Gosden's colt is nicely drawn and will take plenty of stopping in his bid to extended that sequence. Salt Island boasts some strong form in defeat and will find this easier than the Commonwealth Cup he performed so admirably in last time, and Wind Fire should be on the premises if recapturing the level of form that carried her into third in the Temple Stakes.

Top Tip: Waady (12)
Watch out for: Salt Island (10)

WAADY defends an unbeaten course record, and looks a Group winner waiting to happen, so he looks the one to beat from a decent stall. Mecca's Angel is the class act in the field, and would be a serious player if allowed to take her chance on the forecast quick ground (non-runner at Royal Ascot), with Salt Island another to note on his first run over 5f.

A strong pace looks assured with front-runners Ifwecan and Jacob Black drawn adjacently in two and three, so this could be set up perfectly for the strong-travelling SPARK PLUG. Brian Meehan's charge suffered a nasty fall in the Hunt Cup, clipping heels when still in with a chance a furlong from home. He escaped unscathed and can showcase the turn of foot he displayed when winning at Newbury the time previously, with Ryan Moore the ideal man to negotiate a potentially tricky draw in one. Master Carpenter, a Group Three winner last season, shaped as though he was coming back to the boil at Ayr and would be a danger to all if rediscovering his peak form. Sahaafy wasn't beaten far in the Britannia and is sure to play a part, while Basem, You're Fired and Gabrial's Kaka can all be given a chance in a thoroughly competitive contest.

John Gosden won this race 12 months ago with Belle D'Or and has a good chance to repeat the dose courtesy of JELLICLE BALL. Sent off at 7/1 for the 1000 Guineas, she failed to land a blow that day but was back on song when staying on for a good fourth in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot and looks like 1m is her trip. Montalcino didn't shape as though a drop in distance was needed when runner-up in this grade over 1m2f latest. That said, she has strong claims on that form and Ryan Moore has an excellent record (5-12 over last five years) when teaming up with Brian Meehan. Black Cherry steps up in class on a hat-trick and the progressive Richard Hannon inmate completes the shortlist.

BLACK CHERRY created a very favourable impression when running out a clear-cut winner of a C&D handicap last month, a performance backed up by the clock, so she can take the rise to listed class in her stride. The unbeaten GOLDEN HORN produced a memorable performance to see off Jack Hobbs in the Derby and he is tough to oppose after the second hacked up in the Irish equivalent last weekend. This rite of passage against older horses does hold some dangers, though, and the forecast prices do limit his appeal for betting purposes. Dual Group 1 winner The Grey Gatsby is the most credible danger after finishing an unlucky runner-up in the Prince Of Wales's but three-time C&D winner Western Hymn, who trailed The Grey Gatsby at Ascot, shouldn't be overlooked at his favourite venue. Cougar Mountain also showed some encouraging signs at the Royal Meeting and a step up in trip could yield further improvement in first-time blinkers.

Last year's winner HAVANA BEAT looked a non-stayer in the Gold Cup, but was just two lengths behind subsequent Hardwicke winner Snow Sky at York previously and is clearly in excellent form. Recent Northumberland Plate fourth and fifth Angel Gabrial and Suegioo pose a significant threat, particularly the latter, who was given a lot to do at Newcastle last week but caught the eye when making a late challenge. Eye of The Storm could have more to offer for his new connections after an encouraging run at Goodwood.

HAVANA BEAT found the Ascot Gold Cup a step too far for both stamina and class last time, but this test is much more suitable, so he is taken to repeat last year's success. Apart for the 4-y-os, this is tightly knit, with Angel Gabrial and Eye of The Storm feared most.
