An unattractive betting heat opens the card with little form of note on offer. Therefore, REET PETITE is given only a tentative vote after improving on previous displays to finish runner-up in a first-time visor at Catterick. The headgear is retained and he can reassert his dominance over Sunhill Lodge Lady (fifth) and go one better. Black Pudding couldn't justify market support when fifth at Hamilton, but is interesting in a new set of blinkers at this modest level, while new tack is fitted to Blazing Rose and Show Spirit and both deserve a market check for leading connections.

The vote goes to Black Pudding, who disappointed in the face of strong support on nursery debut at Hamilton last time but with connections clearly thinking him capable of better he may be worth chancing sporting first-time blinkers. The 105,000 guinea purchase Duelling Dragon makes plenty of appeal after finishing just a neck adrift over track and trip on his third start. The Henrythenavigator gelding easily accounted for Soviet Union (finished eighth) on that occasion and will be top of many shortlists. He is reluctantly passed over for GLORIOUS SUN, though, as he made a good impression when third at Newmarket on debut, finishing a short-head behind a future winner and a length ahead of a 76-rated rival. Cliff ran a decent race to finish third at Pontefract and completes the shortlist.

POTENT EMBRACE made a bold bid in a competitive Thirsk handicap last week when finishing fifth. A 1lb drop in the weights can do her chances no harm and she appears an unexposed contender for a leading yard. World Record was unable to justify favouritism at Hamilton, but perhaps that came a bit soon after his Beverley victory the time before, and he may represent the biggest danger to the selection. Of the remainder, Border Bandit makes some appeal in his bid for a hat-trick, but his record at this track is a concern, and Green Howard may be capable of going one better on his second at York when getting the better of Barren Brook (fourth).

Watch out for: World Record (12)

Border Bandit has been in rude health of late and looks sure to put up another bold show, whilst Commissar is well handicapped if putting his Goodwood disappointment aside. However, it may pay to chance Alketios who proved disappointing on handicap debut last time but who had looked a horse to keep on side in maidens previously.

Illustrious Prince was ahead of the selection when last sighted at this track and looks the main danger to the selection if remaining in good heart. Mon Brav lost little in defeat when runner-up at York last time and his supporters will be looking to gain compensation, while Gold Beau goes up 5lb for scoring at Ayr but can remain competitive from his new mark.

SICILIAN BAY found just one too good at this track recently, and with the winner going on to score again since, she looks the one to side with. Rough Courte has strung together a couple of decent efforts and looks a major player, but perhaps Lilly Junior makes more appeal as she was well backed when unseating her rider at Carlisle and can strike now dropped to claiming levels. Scrutiny completes the shortlist on his second start for this yard but may need the rain to fall on North Yorkshire.

RUN WITH PRIDE was just touched off by Stewards' Cup eighth Joey's Destiny at Nottingham, beating Tatlisu to runner-up spot in the process, and looks to be well ahead of his mark on the evidence of that form. Mississippi is a consistent performer and his recent third at Yarmouth in a stronger 0-90 handicap suggests he can remain competitive now dropped another 1lb. Sunraider ran well in defeat when finishing a two-length third at Pontefract and can get on the premises, while Burren View Lady bids for a follow-up success after scoring at Thirsk and deserves closer market inspection.
