Connections hinted that Clonard Lad would go back up in trip after winning a maiden hurdle over 2m 4f last time so the eight-year-old is worth taking on returned to minimum trip. Military Bowl and The Game Changer both look likely to achieve more when switched to handicaps so GILGAMBOA gets the nod. Enda Bolger's charge was victorious at Galway in October and, with more progress likely, can account for this field. Ange Balafre warrants respect although the four-year-old hasn't beaten a great deal thus far.

There doesn't appear much strength in depth here so APACHE JACK should get off the mark over timber. Although Dessie Hughes's charge is likely to prove better over further, the five-year-old shaped with promise on his seasonal bow and will strip fitter here. Rough Justice appears modest at best but looks the biggest danger to the selection with Shemshal, who should appreciate the return to better ground, also considered for the minor money.

A high quality, if small, field line up for this year's renewal and ARVIKA LIGEONNIERE (nb) can land the spoils. The eight-year-old created a strong impression as a novice, his defeat at Cheltenham easily excused (better going right-handed and blew out quickly) before winning in grand style at Punchestown. He did everything asked of him on his seasonal reappearance and looks set to make his mark in open-age company this term. Flemenstar left Peter Casey and joined Tony Martin in the summer after a quiet second-half to the season (reportedly wrong on a number of occasions). His reappearance was no more than satisfactory, however, and the eight-year-old isn't without question marks to his name now. Sir Des Champs, a gallant second in the Gold Cup before landing the Punchestown equivalent, returns as one the top contenders for the Blue Riband this time around, although this trip is short of his optimum and he is likely to need the run today. Rubi Light, a fair performer in his own right, looks out of his depth against these rivals.
