Of those with form, only two go to post with realistic claims and KICKS FOR FREE should take plenty of beating. De Soto did finish second in the 2005 Cheltenham Festival bumper so cannot be completely ruled out now that he has shown signs of a return to form. Blythe Knight disappointed when push came to shove in heavy ground at Uttoxeter - this quicker surface should suit better - and Khyber Kim looks the most interesting debutant.

Yes Sir was mooted as a possible contender for the King George later on the card so clearly warrants the utmost respect; he has been impressive but is far from a certainty in this company. The unbeaten According To John is a serious player having impressed when beating Royal Rosa on his chase debut, but preference is for KNOWHERE who has his first attempt at this trip having run creditably in some top handicaps already this season. Bold Fire receives all the allowances and warrants respect, whilst Ungaro and Boychuk, who both have something to find on the form book, are unexposed and cannot be ruled out.

This is all about STRAW BEAR who was hugely impressive on his seasonal return in the Fighting Fifth. Desert Quest didn't seem to act on the ground there and there must be similar doubts today whilst Noble Request is entitled to come on for the run and may get closer but has plenty to do to reverse the form. Afsoun is the dark horse of the contest, but he has plenty to find on the form book as does Jazz Messenger who is unlikely to be good enough to lower the McManus colours.

Although there are still one or two justifiable lingering doubts in the minds of many, KAUTO STAR should be able to put them to bed this afternoon. Unbeaten since falling at the third in the Queen Mother in March, Paul Nicholls' inmate proved his stamina with victory in the Betfair Chase at Haydock and then revealed his versatility with an awesome win in the Tingle Creek. Monkerhostin was a close second in last year's renewal and should go well again as this race appears to have been his sole target of the season so far. This is another big test for Racing Demon who won the Peterborough chase impressively but he has stamina to prove here (shouldn't be a problem); Monet's Garden should be even better at this trip and looks the biggest danger on paper. This is a big ask for the promising Commercial Flyer and Exotic Dancer but both look capable of running well at each-way prices.

YABOYA looked as if he would have gone close against a well handicapped rival at Cheltenham with a clear round; he jumped well in the main and can make amends today. A market move for either Oedipe or Thames would clearly be of interest with Craven another who warrants consideration on his chase debut. Marcel is talented but far from straightforward and a bigger threat is Muhtenbar who has run a series of good races against some talented horses without getting his head in front over fences.

It will need a fine ride from Ruby Walsh to get L'Oudon home in front as he doesn't always deliver as much as he promises. Smart Mover makes plenty of appeal but OSCATELLO is marginally preferred now that his yard has found some form. The trip is a slight concern but he showed smart form as a novice last year and should be all the better for last month's run which was the first time that he'd finished outside the first two.
