Hardly a vintage opener, so MOUJIK BORGET gets only a tentative vote. Venetia Williams' charge won a similar race on this card last year from the same mark, proving his ability to go well fresh, and the traditionally excellent form of this yard in November is no secret. Lightening Rod could prove the biggest danger after scoring by seven lengths at Wetherby, although a 9lb rise in the weights will make life much tougher, while Vasco Du Ronceray is still unexposed in handicaps for powerful connections.

NO DUFFER gets the tentative vote in this competitive staying chase. The seven-year-old won pretty much as he liked on his first outing for Tom George over 2m7f at Stratford and open to plenty of further improvement, he looks capable of defying an 8lb rise. The booking of in-form, top jockey Barry Geraghty enhances his chances further. Dark Glacier arrives in the form of his life and certainly showed no signs of stopping when landing a 3m2f contest on soft ground at Carlisle. He warrants respect off a 6lb higher mark, while other last-time-out scorers Gas Line Boy and Bennys Well add further spice to the race.

DAWALAN has returned in good order this term, building on his reappearance second with a fine runner-up effort in a Listed handicap at Ascot last time. A 2lb rise for that effort appears workable and improvement is expected now he steps up to 2m4f for the first time. The main danger may be Morito Du Berlais, who has been rejuvenated by a summer breathing operation and won on his last two starts at Exeter and Cheltenham. Lyvius chased home the well-regarded Spirit Of Shankly at Aintree last time and is another worthy of consideration.

This represents an unattractive betting medium with The New One fully expected to land his second victory of the season as he plots a path back to the Champion Hurdle. David Pipe has won three of the last four renewals of this race and his KATKEAU is expected to fare much better than his seventh in the race two years ago. The ex-French gelding has had his share of problems, but showed his best form since joining the yard with defeat of the reopposing Big Easy at Cheltenham last week. A 5lb penalty will likely test his mettle, but he has the scope for improvement and relishes cut underfoot. At the head of the weights is Volnay De Thaix, who is effectively 9lb 'well in' under a penalty for his success at Huntingdon, and boasts some eye-catching form in Pattern events last term. The Secret Singer gelding must carry a mammoth weight, though, and needs to prove himself at this trip. Aubusson and Vieux Lion Rouge clash again after finishing second and third respectively at Chepstow and both remain unexposed, while Upswing, Dara Tango and Unique De Cotte (first reserve) need to be monitored closely in the betting.

A cracking renewal which sees a number of old foes clash again, including past winners Silviniaco Conti (2012) and Cue Card (2013). That pair, although hugely respected, both arrive with questions to answer after disappointing on their reappearances in the Charlie Hall and Haldon Gold Cup respectively, and TAQUIN DU SEUIL looks a better bet. The powerful seven-year-old took giant strides forward from his Newton Abbot return when chasing home Menorah at Wetherby and with forecast testing conditions in his favour, and new pilot Barry Geraghty riding out of his skin, he should take very close order. He also has added help of first-time cheekpieces. Charlie Hall winner Menorah hails from a Philip Hobbs stable going great guns and has to be respected, although the continuous rainfall would be a concern for him, so Dynaste rates the biggest threat. A solid second in this contest last year, he went on to record cracking win and placed efforts at the Cheltenham and Aintree Festival's and with the in-form David Pipe sure to have him wound up for his seasonal bow, he can run another huge race.

SHOTAVODKA has slipped a couple of pounds in the handicap since suffering comprehensive beatings at Newton Abbot and Market Rasen this term but now returned to the scene of his last victory - over 2m6f on soft ground here in May - David Pipe's charge is expected to go well, especially as he's dropping back down in grade this afternoon. Rose Of The Moon wont mind the slow conditions and is worth a market check on his seasonal bow, while Masters Hill is unexposed over fences and could be on a fair mark.
