Although many of these look potentially interesting, there are question marks about them too. Richard's Sundance won well at Exeter but then pulled up at Ascot and hasn't been seen subsequently, while Alfie Sherrin has been absent since sluicing home in a Chepstow bumper in November and is hard to evaluate. Aussie Deal and Little Al have experience on their side but the choice is BALLYCARNEY. He is steadily progressive and his latest second to Aqualung over a similar trip suggested that his turn may be near.

It is rather churlish to suggest that KICKS FOR FREE might be considered slightly disappointing having failed to follow up an effortless chasing debut at Aintree. His defeats at the hands of The Market Man at Newbury and Calgary Bay at Cheltenham were highly respectable efforts and more than good enough on the book to see him home here. Sound Accord comes out second best on ratings, although Mount Sandel received a nice confidence boost when cruising home unchallenged at Fontwell last time.

The champion trainer confuses the issue by fielding two leading contenders and although Medicinal, fourth behind stable companion I'msingingtheblues in a valuable Doncaster handicap, is the choice of Ruby Walsh, OSLOT may prove the value option. He has strong claims on his impressive Galway Plate victory in July but has not repeated that level subsequently. If back to his best he's worth chancing here. Strawberry is consistent over various distances and the recent Kempton winner merits considerable respect.

LOUGH DERG will bring the house down if repeating last year's success and in his current form there's every chance he may do so. His latest effort when conceding lumps of weight all round at Ascot was the most recent in a series of splendid efforts, form that makes him hard to oppose. Afsoun seems far happier back over timber and should give a good account, while Pierrot Lunaire, twice a faller this term, would have tremendous claims if recapturing the top-class form he displayed last season. Straw Bear is another yet to rediscover his best after a spell of steeplechasing.

However, the Nicholls' charge is certain to be suited by this much longer trip and is taken to confirm placings, with his second to Monkerhostin in the BET365 Gold Cup last April the outstanding form on display. Pertinent will be popular representing the Nicholls-Walsh combination and although his third to Carrickboy was a decent effort he has plenty of weight to concede to his opponents. He may simply outclass this field but if SPIDER BOY repeats the level of his recent second to Hello Moscow, he would be a strong each-way alternative at least. Alan King's Onyx Bruere has only been seen once, unplaced in a Newbury bumper, since 2006 but has to be of interest as he has been persevered with for so long.

LATIN AMERICA, a son of Sadler's Wells, made a pleasing debut at this venue when travelling well and comfortably holding Toulaman despite running green. The latter has the weights in his favour now but the winner, a son of Sadler's Wells, looked open to any amount of improvement and can complete the double. Oamaru Stone looks a massive threat, having joined Paul Nicholls after landing an Irish point in November, while High Gales ran an excellent race at Ayr and looks a danger to all under Denis O'Regan.
