Following a thoroughly pleasing comeback in the Gordon Richard Stakes, CANNOCK CHASE rates a confident selection. Sir Michael Stoute's four-year-old made rapid strides as a three-year-old and is expected to make up into a top-class performer this season. With forecast conditions in his favour, he can take another step up the ladder this afternoon. Air Pilot won well at Listed level last time and is feared most, while Maverick Wave and Fattsota merit respect too.

The progressive CANNOCK CHASE is expected to prove all the better for his Sandown return and can give Sir Michael Stoute yet another winner in this Group 3. He cannot be completely overlooked, while chances are also given to Goring and Billy Slater. PLEIADES gets the verdict, though, as the son of Galileo is a potential improver going up to 1m for the first time having bumped into a useful Charlie Appleby inmate on his handicap/seasonal debut at Beverley.

RAJ TO RICHES has gone down narrowly on both racecourse appearances to date, failing by a short-head at Windsor before getting caught in the dying strides at Nottingham. He is nicely drawn in stall five and could take some pegging back if handling these slower conditions. Rogues' Gallery heads the dangers having himself hit the crossbar the last twice, too. Young John is another likely contender, while Falcon Annie should be monitored closely in the betting.

YOUNG JOHN was second in a small-field maiden which produced a good time on debut, and he is taken to progress for his yard that has won this race twice since 2010. NORTHGATE LAD accounted for subsequent Group 2 winner Mattmu when scoring on debut at Beverley last year and looked on good terms with himself when beaten by under a length into third over 5f at Thirsk last time. This stiffer test could unlock further improvement and he's expected to go well from his low draw. Cartmell Cleave won well at Bath on his reappearance but is 9lb higher now and the main danger may prove to be Johnny B Goode, who is best served by some cut.
