The penny appeared to drop last time for KOUP DE KANON, who was a good second over this trip at Hereford and might have got a lot closer but for traffic problems on the run-in. This is a little tougher but there should be more to come after just five starts. Malin Bay was well beaten at Sedgefield last time out but has some good efforts to his name and could prove a threat if putting his best foot forward. Monkton Vale, Tower and Claude Carter can all be given chances on the pick of their form.
It's doubtful this will provide Malin Bay or Dar Es Salaam with a sufficient test of stamina, and the vote goes to Koup de Kanon who is open to further improvement on his debut for Donald McCain. Claude Carter and Brave Spartacus should also figure.

This should go the way of NOTUS DE LA TOUR, a decent hurdler who was placed in a Grade 3 hurdle at Newbury at the start of the year. He tackles fences for the first time but is sure to have been well schooled and can make the long trip north pay off. Stopped Out is another useful hurdler who could go well on his chasing debut and he looks the one for the forecast, although Signalman has finished second in both starts over fences to date and has obvious claims if handling this step-up in trip.
Notus de La Tour is better class to the rest over hurdles and is taken to make a winning start to his chasing career. Signalman looks best of those with experience over fences.

HOUSTON DYNIMO has proved a good recruit to the jumping game, with two wins and three places from eight starts over hurdles. He's won his last two starts in style at Market Rasen and here and looks capable of giving weight away to all of these rivals. Benefique, a game winner over this trip at Wetherby latest, looks the one for the forecast but Persian Peril has a fine record on the Flat and it would be foolish to rule him out as he makes his debut over timber.
Some interesting recruits to jumping, particularly Persian Peril, twice a winner on the Flat this year and from a stable which does well with dual-purpose performers. Houston Dynimo and Benefique have both bagged a brace of victories over hurdles and should put their experience to good use.

QHILIMAR doesn't look the easiest of rides but there's no doubting his ability. He was a fairly comfortable winner over 3m3f at Newton Abbot last month - his second win in three starts - and although he carries another 8lb here, he looks capable of landing the spoils if putting his best foot forward. Minella Boys has been pulled up in his last two starts but has claims on the pick of his form while Humbie won gamely at Carlisle this month but has more on his plate today with another 7lb to carry.
Qhilimar and Humbie are last-time-out winners who appear capable of further progress. The former is narrowly preferred, with Captain Americo another to consider.

If HIDDEN KEEL starts this season's campaign in the same mood as he ended the last, he should take all the beating. A winner in three of his five starts over fences, he ended the campaign with two comprehensive wins over this trip at Exeter and looks hard to beat here off a 4lb higher mark. Gilbarry fell at Chepstow this month on his seasonal reappearance but landed a Grade 2 novice chase at Ayr in April and has obvious claims if recapturing that form. Divers has won three times over fences in novice company but has plenty of weight here.
There's not much to choose between Hidden Keel and Divers on the book, but the former returns to action with his yard in cracking form and has to be the call. Mr Moonshine receives a fair bit of weight and has the ability to play a part if putting his best foot forward.

It could pay to side with FRENCH SEVENTYFIVE in what looks a fairly open heat. With just four hurdle starts under his belt, Tim Walford's gelding is the least exposed member of this line-up and a 3lb rise in the handicap for his workmanlike victory at Southwell last time (second has won twice since) looks fairly lenient. Howizee had been knocking on the door in maiden and novice contests earlier this year and warrants respect now sent handicapping, while Sundown Trail ran as though something was amiss at Ayr latest and, a game winner on his previous outing, he can be given another chance.
Sundown Trail's stamina ran dry over a longer trip on his final 2010/11 outing, but he's well treated on his gritty victory prior to that and is worth another chance on this reappearance. The form of French Seventyfive's Southwell success has been boosted since and he too commands lots of respect, while Arisea completes the shortlist.

Any market moves in this race full of newcomers could well be worth noting, but PHOENIX RETURNS edges the vote representing the stable who won this contest in 2006 and 2009. The Alan Swinbank stable are well known for churning out bumper winners and he is sure to have this son of Phoenix Reach fighting fit for his racecourse debut. I Got Sunshine represents the Keith/James Reveley combination who were responsible for the bumper winner here on the 20th of this month and is worthy of consideration, while Optimist and Buckshee make up the shortlist.
Mostly guesswork with these youngsters, but Alan Swinbank's record in similar events means that Phoenix Returns has to be the pick, with Optimist and Ueueteotl potential dangers.
