Philip Hobbs and Richard Johnson teamed up to win this race 12 months ago and that pair have another big chance this time around with NO COMMENT. A winner of a bumper at last season's Punchestown Festival, he was all the rage when returning over hurdles at Chepstow two weeks ago, only to unseat Barry Geraghty at the second flight. Hopefully there will be no such mistake today and he can make amends. Robin Roe had a number of subsequent winners behind when winning a Warwick bumper in March and he warrants plenty of respect now making the switch to hurdles, while Abbotswood makes up the shortlist.

Eastlake was last seen winning the Topham Chase here in April and must enter calculations on his return to action, while Double Ross should go close if able to reproduce the form of his gritty Chepstow success two weeks ago (Your Busy third). Preference, however, is for the Tom George-trained FORGOTTEN GOLD. The 10-year-old ended last season with solid win and placed efforts at Ascot and Cheltenham respectively, he boasts winning C&D form and has run well fresh on a number of occasions in the past, including first time out last term.

A small but select field heads to post for one of the early season highlights which has seen some top quality winners over the years, including triple scorer Monet's Garden and Kauto Star 10 years ago when he started his meteoric rise to becoming a legend of the National Hunt game. GOD'S OWN had a tremendous end to last season when winning the Melling Chase over C&D before lowering the colours of Vautour in the Punchestown Champion Chase. Tom George's charge tends to need his first outing of the season but he has his favoured good ground on his return to action and surprisingly isn't top weight thanks to Smad Place turning up. Alan King's charge looks the likely pace angle and his bold jumping over this distance should see him to good effect, but the main danger looks to be Three Musketeers. The latter remains unexposed over the larger obstacles having finished fourth in the JLT behind Black Hercules and this lightly-raced son of Flemensfirth looks set for a productive campaign. Vibrato Valtat also merits consideration with his yard currently in flying form and he should be ready to go first time out.

BEGGARS CROSS has long shaped like he would be suited by chasing and the full-brother to Call The Cops has been found an excellent opportunity to open his account at the first time of asking. The six-year-old should be suited by this decent ground and can find the necessary improvement to go very close. Warren Greatrex landed this last year with the talented La Bague Au Roi and he looks to have another smart filly on his hands in the shape of ILOVEMINTS. The daughter of Kayf Tara hacked up on debut at Bangor earlier this year when well backed and the four-year-old is expected to claim this under a penalty. The Lambourn-based handler will be hoping that she proves good enough to take her place in all the big National Hunt flat races in the spring and she can use this as a springboard to those better things. Black Sam showed promising signs in August on her first start in 17 months for Alan King, while Big Robin cost connections 70,000 pounds at the sales in April and has to be respected.
ILOVEMINTS looked potentially smart when running out a 15-length winner on debut at Bangor in March and should be up to defying a penalty for last year's winning yard. Point-winner Big Robin may prove the biggest danger on Rules debut, while Black Sam looks set to do well for new connections this season.
