War Lord has taken a massive step forward over fences this season, winning three times and twice running well behind top 2m novice chaser Edwardstone, the latest when fourth in the Arkle at Cheltenham 23 days ago. Irish raider Gin On Lime is five from eight over the larger obstacles and she arrives fresh following a 146-day break, but a chance is taken on the highly-progressive ERNE RIVER. A lightly-raced seven-year-old, he has really kicked into gear over fences this year, scoring impressively at both Doncaster and Wetherby, and could provide Nick Kent and Charlie Hammond with a well deserved big-race winner this afternoon.

Classy Flat performer PIED PIPER has taken to hurdles like a duck to water, winning impressively at Punchestown and Cheltenham's January meeting before a cracking third in the Triumph Hurdle back at Prestbury Park last month. The layout of this course should suit the son of New Approach down to the ground, in that he can showcase his raw talent and speed, and he is hard to oppose. The Irish look to have a strong grip on this as the main danger appears to be Brazil, who was a determined winner of the Boodles Juvenile Hurdle at Cheltenham. Of the home team, In The Air caught the eye when winning at Newbury five weeks ago and he could surprise one or two.

Protektorat is two from two at this venue, including when bolting up in the Many Clouds Chase in December, and he holds obvious claims, but a gruelling third-placed effort in the Cheltenham Gold Cup less than three weeks ago could leave him vulnerable. Conflated may well have finished second in the Ryanair last month had he not fallen two out but, again, he hasn't had much time to freshen up, nor has Eldorado Allen, who finished third in that contest. Clan Des Obeaux hacked up in this race 12 months ago and perhaps first-time blinkers could help him recapture something like his best, but a chance is taken on 2019 winner KEMBOY. He wouldn't have been suited by the well-watered ground at the Dublin Racing Festival last time and a repeat of his Savills Chase third over Christmas, when narrowly behind subsequent Gold Cup hero A Plus Tard, would give him a massive chance. Unless 11-year-old Bristol De Mai or a rejuvenated Clan Des Obeaux wants to get on with things, Willie Mullins' four-time Grade 1 scorer could boss this race from the front.

EPATANTE finished a length ahead of Zanahiyr when the pair filled second and third in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. Though there's reason to believe Gordon Elliott's five-year-old is still improving, he has yet to win a Grade 1 contest and might just find Nicky Henderson's mare too strong this time. The selection has done little wrong this season, dead-heating for first in the Fighting Fifth and landing the Christmas Hurdle before her Champion Hurdle exploits. She has been keen in the past, but may be able to see out this longer trip. Brewin'upastorm is proven over this distance, winning over C&D in November, and finished ahead of Monmiral at Fontwell, but he was found wanting in this race last year and it's hard to see him improving sufficiently to trouble the top two.

Porlock Bay won the Foxhunter at Cheltenham last year, but he missed that race this time around and has only had one run under Rules since that success, when beaten in a Bangor hunter chase. Mighty Stowaway was third in this year's renewal of the Cheltenham Festival hunter chase and makes his debut for Lawney Hill here, but experience of these fences could count for a lot in this. Last year's Grand National eighth Jett is an obvious danger to all as he ran a cracking race before his stamina gave way there, but it might be worth siding with CAT TIGER. Paul Nicholls' charge failed to make an impact in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham, but he was third in this race last year and showed his liking for these obstacles when fifth in the Grand Sefton earlier this season. Latenightpass was one place ahead of the selection 12 months ago but has not been seen under Rules since, though he has won two out of three in points, while last year's winner Cousin Pascal blundered his way around Cheltenham before pulling up and won't get away with that here.

Frero Banbou is another on a long list of Venetia Williams-trained chasers that have been highly progressive this season and it is quite feasible that the son of Aspis has more improvement to come, but the vote goes to THYME WHITE. Paul Nicholls' charge was one of the main fancies for this year's renewal of the Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival, only to be withdrawn due to the ground, before making a pleasing reappearance at Ascot in late March. That should leave the unexposed chaser in good condition coming here and he holds solid claims. Before Midnight was close up behind Funambule Sivola at Doncaster in January, with the latter subsequently chasing home Energumene in the Champion Chase, and that kind of form puts him in with a big shout. Sky Pirate is worthy of consideration at the top of the weights, with Dancing On My Own, Bold Enough, and Zarkareva leading a three-pronged attack for leading Irish trainer Henry De Bromhead.
