A competitive heat in which LIL ROCKERFELLER gets a tentative nod. Neil King's charge broke his duck at the fifth attempt over timber when wearing down the aggressively ridden Sternrubin at Ascot last time. Good ground and a stiff track will suit today, and Sean Bowen can land another valuable contest en route to being crowned champion conditional. Sternrubin should close the gap on the selection off 3lb better terms and is feared most. Old Guard and Unanimite bring some rock-solid form to the table and merit serious consideration, while Alzammar could run into a place if not inconvenienced by this drop in trip.

Top Tip: Lil Rockerfeller (3)
Watch out for: Sternrubin (8)

UNANIMITE made a mistake at a crucial time when behind a couple of these at Ascot and is worth another chance to build on the promise of his Fred Winter run. Sternrubin was one who finished in front of the selection on that occasion and should go well again, while Alzammaar has the potential for further improvement on the back of his Newbury win.

MENORAH spreadeagled his rivals in this contest last season and he rates a confident selection as he bids to defend his title. Phillip Hobbs' 10-year-old was no match for Silviniaco Conti in the Bowl, much the same as 12 months ago, but that was his first outing since the King George and it ought to have put him spot on for this. He has often produced his best form in the spring on good ground and he gets his ideal race conditions this afternoon. Chief threat Al Ferof also arrives with an Aintree pipe-opener behind him but Paul Nicholls charge is ideally suited by softer ground. Rebel Rebellion has enjoyed something of a renaissance since the turn of the year and can play a part if over his Grand National exertions. Argocat and Pepite Rose enter calculations for each-way purposes.

This looks a highly competitive renewal and a strong case can be made for most of those in the line up. C&D winner Mr Mole bounced back from a fall at the Cheltenham Festival with success at Newton Abbot last year, so it wouldn't be a huge shock if he left his latest effort behind and gave AP McCoy a fitting victory. Sprinter Sacre also bids to put a lacklustre festival showing behind him and would surely sweep these rivals aside if anywhere near his best. The former champion looks a shaky proposition, though, and SPECIAL TIARA doesn't appear to be facing much opposition for the lead, so he gets the vote. The Kayf Tara gelding ran a cracker when getting an easy time of things in front in the Champion Chase and a repeat of his bold front-running display at Kempton in December would make him tough to live with. The loveable veteran Somersby shouldn't be too far away and neither should God's Own, who has run some excellent races in defeat in recent weeks. Court Minstrel was closely matched with the latter at Aintree before a mistake at the last ended his challenge, so he might represent each-way value, and Vibrato Valtat is no forlorn hope back over this course and distance.

MR MOLE can be a hugely-popular winner for A P McCoy on his final day in the saddle. He's much better than what he showed at Cheltenham, and although he looks set to be taken on for the lead, he overcame that scenario when winning here at the turn of the year. Somersby and Special Tiara can fill the same placings as in the Champion Chase.

Nicky Henderson took this end-of-season showcase 12 months ago and looks to have another lively contender in the dropped-in-grade BOBS WORTH. The 2013 Gold Cup winner has undoubtedly been disappointing in recent outings, but arrives fresher than most after just two runs this term, gets his preferred underfoot conditions, and might be worth another try in first-time cheekpieces. The 10-year-old will probably need to be at his best to get the better of Le Reve, who loves it at this track and was staying on behind Rocky Creek at Kempton when last sighted. The last named failed to give his true running in the Grand National and shouldn't be overlooked, but it is interesting that Sam Twiston Davies opts to ride Unioniste who fell in Liverpool but wasn't beaten far by Cheltenham hero Coneygree at Newbury in February. The Package hacked up in first-time blinkers in the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival and is clearly a big danger if that headgear continues to have a positive effect. Paint The Clouds leaves hunter chase company and looks a lively contender, while any money for the Irish raiders Grand Jesture and Vics Canvas could prove noteworthy.

The progressive GRAND JESTURE did best of those ridden prominently when an excellent second to the well-handicapped The Druids Nephew at the Cheltenham Festival last month and makes the most appeal in what looks a highly-competitive affair. Le Reve is also on the upgrade and his record at this track is a big positive, while the drying conditions will suit the prolific Paint The Clouds.

BOX OFFICE has been rather disappointing on his three previous runs for this stable but he was a dual hurdles winner for former connections in France and may well improve on his latest effort at Aintree, when an outpaced seventh over the extended 2m, now granted a stiffer test. Dan Skelton's pair both look interesting, with Stephen Hero sporting first-time blinkers, but with recent Taunton winner Go Odee Go being the pick of Harry Skelton. Handicap debutant Wilberdragon merits consideration and this step up in trip looks ideal for Rayvin Black, while L'aigle Royal posted a creditable effort when fourth in a Grade 3 C&D handicap latest and could be of interest to each-way punters.

He's very much a player, while similar sentiments apply to effortless Newbury scorer Phone Home and lightly raced quantity The Ould Lad. GENEROUS RANSOM beat the reopposing Horizontal Speed (fourth) when finishing third in the novice handicap chase at the Cheltenham Festival last month, though, and a big performance is expected from Nick Gifford's C&D winner off just 4lb higher.
