Bumper winner Nobel is improving with each outing over timber and should have his say, but it's PARISIENNE GALE that looks like the one to beat. She arrives on the back of three wins from her last four starts over fences and landed a similar event to this on her penultimate hurdle outing in June. Richard Ford's mare should be too good for these in her current mood.
Astronaut backed up her winning points form in the summer with two third-places back under NH rules, but he would ideally like faster ground. However, these conditions should suit SAMSON DES GLAS down to the ground and Graham Lee's mount can go one better today after finishing a narrow second in a 2m4f seller at Hexham earlier this month. Lazy Lena was two lengths back in fourth behind the selection that day and can't be ruled out on slightly better terms here.
Some interesting recruits to the chasing world here, including unbeaten hurdler Bellaney Jewel and the consistent Martha's Kinsman. However, JULIUS CAESAR completed a hat-trick in a Grade 3 hurdle when last seen in March and looks the most notable of the newcomers to this sphere. Bumper, hurdles and points winner The Rising Moon will have learnt plenty from his chasing debut over 2m1f here last month and could be in the firing line today.
Nathos eased down for a cosy six length victory over 2m3f in the mud here recently and is a threat today, despite a 7lb penalty. Mister Arjay is another that has claims despite a rise in the handicap following his 2m4f victory at Wetherby latest, but the preference is for NOT LEFT YET. After mixing with some useful sorts in his opening campaign, Martin Pipe's charge made a mockery of his first handicap mark to score in style over 2m at Cheltenham last week. This sterner test of stamina should suit and he looks the type that can run up a sequence before the handicapper gets his measure.
HAWK'S LANDING should have more to offer following his first run for nearly a year over 2m7f at Exeter recently. He has tumbled down the handicap since mixing in Grade 2 company last season and can return to winning ways at this level. Garryvoe ran a respectable sixth in the National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup at Cheltenham in March on only his third outing over fences and should have more to offer today. He is a serious threat along with Heidi III, whose chances will improve with rain.
Jones's Road will strip-fitter for his recent outing and the drop in trip is in his favour, while C&D winner Tacolino is unbeaten in two starts at today's Lincolnshire venue. More can be expected from Bergerac following his chasing debut, but it's BEAT THE HEAT that makes the most appeal. The consistent seven-year-old is 2lb lower than when third over 2m6f here last month and should be better suited by today's trip.
NOR'NOR'EAST could take all the beating in the finale. Jonjo O'Neill's charge relished the step up in trip to open his account with something to spare over 2m4f at Wetherby last month. Point-to-point winner No Guarantees returned from a year off to go a close second over 2m4f at Carlisle last time out and, with better expected today, can give the selection the most to think about. Elsewhere, Mr Pointment has displayed ability in NH Flat events and could give a good account on his hurdling bow.
