New Year's Eve displayed a high level of ability in bumpers last term, finishing runner-up at the Cheltenham Festival, and he warrants plenty of respect now sent hurdling, but race-fitness could just give RIVER MAIGUE the edge. Also promising in bumpers last season, Nicky Henderson's gelding made a promising start to his hurdling career when runner-up behind the smart Dodging Bullets at Cheltenham's Open Meeting 40 days ago and there is every chance he will improve for that first start since April. Rysbrack rates an each-way contender.

Top Tip: River Maigue (8)
Watch out for: New Year's Eve (6)

A really good novice hurdle to kick things off. River Maigue could hardly have made a more promising start over hurdles when second in a Cheltenham Grade 2 last month and will likely be hard to beat, though he does bump into a potentially smart recruit in last season's Champion Bumper runner-up New Year's Eve. Spirit of Shankly looks best of the rest.

ELENIKA had Rajdhani Express back in second when landing a 2m1f beginners' chase at Huntingdon last month and is taken to confirm those placings, reopposing in a handicap today over this longer trip. The last-named has place claims if bouncing back from his recent fall at Taunton, while big runs from the eased-in-grade pair Grove Pride and Valmari, both of whom contested Pattern events when last sighted, would also come as no surprise. Coole River shaped with promise on his return from a break at Wincanton latest and is also considered.

Watch out for: Rajdhani Express (2)

Rajdhani Express was probably set to win when falling 3 out at Taunton last time and can make amends here providing that hasn't left a mark. Valmari also came to grief on her latest start and enters the reckoning, while Milarrow has to be considered also back up in trip.

DYNASTE hasn't put a foot wrong over fences and didn't have to improve from his Cheltenham defeat of Fingal Bay to land Grade 2 honours at Newbury. The runner-up has since scored at the same level, so the form is strong, and he boasts a very similar profile to last year's winner Grands Crus. Poungach's Haydock success has also been franked by the second subsequently, although the step up from 2m6f will need to spark significant improvement. That isn't out of the question, but a more serious threat comes in the shape of Grade 1 winner Lovcen, even though there will be no margin for error in the jumping department on his chasing debut. Hadrian's Approach beat The Druids Nephew at Ascot and was still in contention when departing at Newbury, so merits respect for place purposes.

Top Tip: Dynaste (1)
Watch out for: Lovcen (3)

Dynaste is already one of the best of this season's novice chasers, and should prove very hard to beat in this field. Smart hurdler Poungach is getting his act together over fences now and could emerge as the biggest threat.

CINDERS AND ASHES couldn't get to grips with Countrywide Flame in the Fighting Fifth, but he wasn't as fit as his rival on that occasion and connections are expecting a much better showing here. He beat Darlan to the Supreme Novices' Hurdle spoils back in the spring, and Nicky Henderson has had his charge ready to run for a while, with the weather scuppering plans of running at Cheltenham and Newcastle. With that in mind, the recent downpours are against Darlan, whereas Raya Star handles soft well enough and will appreciate the drop in trip after chasing home Oscar Whisky at his beloved Ascot. Dodging Bullets was only beaten four lengths by Countrywide Flame in the Triumph Hurdle, and two novice wins this term prove he is a more solid proposition now.

Watch out for: Darlan (3)

Countrywide Flame enjoyed a fitness edge when slamming Cinders And Ashes in the Fighting Fifth, and it's sure to be closer between the pair now, but with heavy ground in prospect, he's taken to uphold the form. Darlan is a big danger on the book, but testing conditions are not certain to play to his strengths.

Long Run has to build on a satisfactory Haydock return - where he reversed Gold Cup form with The Giant Bolster - if he is to regain the crown he relinquished to Kauto Star 12 months ago. His stamina is proven, which is more than can be said for Cue Card, and, even though he was second two seasons ago, Ryanair winner Riverside Theatre will do well to stay in these conditions. Grands Crus is a force to be reckoned with if a recent wind operation helps him recapture the ability that saw him land the Feltham here last year. KAUTO STONE showed that 3m in the mud holds no fears for him when beating subsequent Hennessy third First Lieutenant at Down Royal and as he is on an upward curve, will stay and handle the going, he could be value to maintain the family tradition.

Watch out for: Long Run (8)

Long Run's 2 career-best performances have come in this race, but he isn't bombproof by any means, and the likely strong pace could put his jumping under pressure. With that in mind it may pay to take a chance with Cue Card, whose breeding offers hope that he will stay this far. Riverside Theatre and Kauto Stone may fare best of the rest.
